Correspondence, manuscripts, documents and photographs of Count Eduard Ivanovich Totleben, Russian Fortification Engineer, General of Imperial Russian Army. The correspondence includes one letter from Tsar ́Alexander II, two from Dmitrii Alekseevich Miliutin, a draft of a letter Totleben sent to the Tsar, several invitations to official functions and a bound volume containing Totleben's letters to his wife written during the Crimean War. The manuscripts comprise nine volumes of Totleben's diary entries from the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878. Among the documents are diplomas and awards received by Totleben and a copy of his service record. There are several photographs of Totleben and other officers, including N. K. Shilder. Also included are the memoirs of Eduard Totleben's son, Nikolai Eduardovich Totleben, titled Vospominaniia Fligel'-Adiutanta. Al. Savelʹev's book Istoricheskīĭ ocherk Inzhenernago upravlenīi︠a︡ v Rossīi with author's inscription to ̇Eduard Ivanovich Totleben ("Ego siiatel'stvu Eduardu Ivanovichu Totlebenu. Gluboko priznatelʹnyi avtor") was removed from the collection and cataloged.

These research notes on William Maurice Ewing (1906-1974), Professor of Geology at Columbia University, 1944-1974, and Director of the Lamont-Doherty Geological Observatory, Columbia University, 1949-1972, were compiled by Sir Edward Crisp Bullard for his "Biographical Notice" for The Royal Society, 1975. The materials are mostly correspondence with Ewing's colleagues and family, corrected drafts of the memoir, photographs, and approximately 250 reprints of scientific papers by Ewing, arranged chronologically, 1930-1977.

This material is chiefly letters concerning the acquisition of books on photography, book lists, dealers' bills, and correspondence relating to Mr. Epstean's gifts of photographic books, etc. to Columbia University and the Library of Congress. There are five boxes of pictures (photographic portraits) of Epstean and other individuals. Also, the typescript of Epstean's translation of Josef Eder's HISTORY OF PHOTOGRAPHY and the galley proofs with Epstean's handwritten corrections; and three loose leaf binders containing reprints and typescripts of articles and speeches by Epstean, and letters of congratulation to him on his receiving several awards.

Correspondence of Dwight D. Eisenhower and his friend Bermingham who first met when Eisenhower became President of Columbia. During his tenure as Columbia's President and later, as commander of the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), Eisenhower exchanged long letters with Bermingham, outlining in detail his views of world affairs. When Eisenhower became President of the United States, the correspondence continued, and the two men met at least twice at the White House. The collection also includes a photograph of Eisenhower, inscribed to Bermingham; letters to Bermingham from Antonio Bermúdez, director of PEMEX, and Alexander Makinsky, president of the Coca Cola Export Corporation in Paris; and some correspondence between Bermingham and Eisenhower's aides.

Correspondence, manuscripts, notecards, tabulation sheets, microfilms, photographs, and photostats. The bulk of the collection is made up of his Columbia University doctoral dissertation, THE OLD STOCK COMPANY SCHOOL OF ACTING; A STUDY OF THE BOSTON MUSEUM, and related research materials. The dissertation, published in 1945, uses the Bostom Museum Stock Company to exemplify the nature of American dramatic arts in the nineteenth century vis-a-vis professional theater organizations and their dual purpose of producing shows and training actors. The research materials appear in a variety of formats: chronological lists on notecards recording the actors that performed in particular plays; tabulation sheets that fulfill many purposes, such as recording each actor's experience, the roles the actors played, and the years that they were active with the company. Photographs include those taken of theater sets, actors in costume, and pictures of the Museum building. Photostats and microfilms are almost entirely reproductions of advertisements and flyers

Professional and personal files including Armstrong's correspondence with professional associations, other engineers, and friends, his research notes, circuit diagrams, lectures, articles, legal papers, and other related materials. Of his many inventions and developments, the most important are: 1) the regenerative or feedback circuit, 1912, the first amplified radio reception, 2) the superheterodyne circuit, 1918, the basis of modern radio and radar, 3) superregeneration, 1922, a very simple, high-power receiver now used in emergency mobile service, and 4) frequency modulation - FM, 1933, static-free radio reception of high fidelity. More than half the files concern his many lawsuits, primarily with Radio Corporation of America, over infringement of the Armstrong patents. Litigation continued until 1967. Other files deal with his work in the Marcellus Hartley Research Laboratory at Columbia University, 1913-1935, and with the American Expeditionary Forces in France during World War I, his Air Force contracts for communications development, Army research during World War II, the Radio Club of America, the Institute of Radio Engineers, FM development at his radio station at Alpine, N.J., the use of FM in television, his involvement in Federal Communications Commission hearings and legislation, and his work with the Zenith Radio Corporation. Papers include corespondence, manuscripts, documents, photographs, a subject file, and printed materials. Correspondence includes a letter by Frank A. Golder. Manuscripts consist chiefly of extensive memoirs by Maĭdel,́ with many related documents, photographs, and other items appended. Her memoirs discuss her life up to 1919 in detail, with a great deal of coverage of her education. She studied at the Kronshtadskai︠a︡ Aleksandrinskai︠a︡ Zhenskai︠a︡ Gimnazii︠a︡, and then at the Imperatorskiĭ Zhenskiĭ Pedagogicheskiĭ Institut in St. Petersburg. Another memoir discusses her experiences in Petrozavodsk in 1941-44. There is a subject file concerning the Helsinki Aleksandrovskai︠a︡ Gimnazii︠a︡, with which Maĭdel ́was associated, in 1917-23. Printed materials include a book by E. Eĭkhgolt́s, "Ti︠u︡remnyĭ vrach i ego pat︠s︡ienty" (1916).

The collection includes correspondence from Konstantin Balḿont, Nikolaĭ Evreĭnov, Zinaida Gippius, Georgiĭ Grebenshchikov, Vasiliĭ Maklakov, Sergeĭ Potresov and Nadezhda Teffi. There is one letter each from Boris Bakhmeteff, Vera Bunina, Aleksandr Grechaninov, Aleksandr Kuprin and Alekseĭ Tolstoĭ. The manuscripts include poems and a play scenario by Nadezhda Teffi as well as Roshchina-Insarova's autobiographical essays and article about Sergeĭ Lifar.́ In addition, there are three scrapbooks containing clippings and programs of Roshchina-Insarova's performances, and approximately 40 photographs of her.

This collection includes nine letters of Ralph Waldo Emerson as well as letters of Louis Agassiz, Amos Bronson Alcott, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr., Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, James Russell Lowell, John Lothrop Motley, Charles Sumner, and John Greenleaf Whittier. In addition, there are two incomplete manuscripts by Emerson and one document from the Liverpool Custom-house signed by Nathaniel Hawthorne as Consul for the United States. The collection also includes the corrected typescript, index, and page and galley proofs for Thomas Franklin Currier, A BIBLIOGRAPHY OF OLIVER WENDELL HOLMES (New York, 1953) which was edited by Professor Tilton. Also, some early correspondence and photographs of the Tilton family and friends. There are letters from the actors Annie Louise Ames, Richard J. Dillon, and Hans L. Meery to Tilton's grandfather, Bernard Paul Verne, as well as photographs, tintypes, and daguerreotypes of the Verne family and friends.

(designed by Gander, Gander & Gander, with Litchfield as consulting architect); and other projects.
