The papers relate chiefly to the business, financial, real estate, military, civic and personal activities of Nicholas Fish. There are letters from various military figures concerning army provisions during the Revolution, letters relating to lands given to Fish for his services during the war, twenty letters from various individuals to George Clinton (1739-1812), and ten letters to DeWitt Clinton. The Hamilton Fish letters deal with business matters of his father, Nicholas, after his death. There are a few personal letters from several family members and a diary of Nicholas Fish from 1784. The documents consist of real estate and financial matters of the family as well as various petitions on matters of a civic nature

Ludlow, 1774-1795; letters and documents relating to the estate of Philip Livingston, including material on the Schoharie lands and letters to Charles Ludlow, executor, 1811-1814; Charles Ludlow papers including family and business letters, 1790-1809, miscellaneous business papers, 1773-1815; miscellaneous business receipts, 1785-1829, and checkbook and checks; documents relating to the estate of William Ludlow, 1785-1793; and documents relating to the estate of David Van Horne, in account with Charles Ludlow, 1765-1811.

Correspondence and papers of various members of the Kane and Hand families. The collection includes the business correspondence of Oliver Kane of Albany (early 19th century); the correspondence of Moses Hand (1764-1826) of Baltimore; the letters and papers of Thomas Jennings Hand (1824-1908) of New York, with many letters from Professor William Hand Browne of John Hopkins; the diaries and account books of Thomas Jennings Hand, extending from 1859 to 1901, and the household account books of his wife; the family correspondence, accounts, and personal papers of Oliver Kane-Hand (1863-1941); various legal documents and papers of Oliver Kane-Hand (1863-1941); various legal documents and papers of Oliver Kane King, Thomas Jennings Hand, Jr. and Oliver Kane-Hand; and a group of family photographs.

Family letters to Nicholson from his father, James Nicholson, and from his sisters Hannah Nicholson Gallatin, second wife of the Secretary of the Treasury and diplomat Albert Gallatin, Catherine Nicholson Few, wife of Senator William Few from Georgia and signer of the Constitution, and Jehoiadden Nicholson Chrystie, wife of James Chrystie of New York.

Letters written by and relating to Watts and members of his family. There are 45 letters written by Charles Wats, dated principally from Biloxi, Miss., to members of his family in New York, and 21 letters from, to, and relating to his sister, Helen Watts, and her husband, H. Floyd Jones, and his family. Also, a few letters from Charles Watts, Sr., to his son, Judge Charles Watts. The letters are personal in nature, dealing with family affairs, daily life, and friends.

Letters, mainly of a personal nature, written by and to various members of the Leverich family. The correspondence centers around Charles P. Leverich and his wife Matilda.

Letters of Hoffman to his family. There are seventeen letters to his niece, Matilda Nicholas Whitman, and one letter to his half-sister, Ann Hoffman Nicholas. The correspondence deals with the literary and social life in New York and with the Hoffman family. Two of the letters have notes added by his father, Josiah Ogden Hoffman. Also, an engraved portrait of Charles Fenno Hoffman.

The records of W.R. Grace & Co. cover the rise of the Grace shipping business from 1864 until World War II. The early correspondence concerns all aspects of the shipping business in New York and South America, mining interests in Peru and Chile, the railroad in Costa Rica, the inter-ocean canal planned for Nicaragua, and political interests throughout Central and South America. There are letter books, correspondence, and scrapbooks of clippings for all aspects of W.R. Grace's career. There are minute books and other documents for more than 50 subsidiary companies owned by W.R. Grace & Co. or by family members. The papers of Joseph Peter Grace (1872-1950) continue the business, family, and philanthropic activities until 1942. There are also 20 reels of motion picture film about the Grace Co. South American interests in the 1950s.

A photostatic copy of the diary of Strong. The diary, running without interruption from Oct. 1835 through June 1875, contains a wealth of information about life in New York City. Its scope broadens to include the national scene with the outbreak of the Civil War. There is also a miscellaneous assortment of approximately 150 photostatic copies of personal correspondence with family and friends, correspondence during his term as treasurer of the U.S. Sanitary Commission, original drawings, caricatures and doodlings, invitations, guest lists, theater and concert programs, newspaper clippings, a family tree, and photographs. Includes typed index of Columbia references in Strong's diary.
