Abstract Or Scope

A collection of letters and documents pertaining to the American Revolution, or to personages who figured in it. Among the persons represented in the collection are John Adams, Edmund Burke, Aaron Burr, Lord Cornwallis, Benjamin Franklin, Nathanael Greene, John Hancock, Patrick Henry, John Jay, Thomas Jefferson, John Paul Jones, Marquis de Lafayette, Henry Brockholst Livingston, Robert Morris, William Pitt, Benjamin Rush, Baron von Steuben, and George Washington. The largest group of manuscripts in the collection is the sixteen letters of Henry Laurens, the South Carolina planter, and his son, John Laurens, among which is a "manumission letter" written by Henry Laurens to his son on 14 August 1776, shortly after the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Approximately 12,000 letters to Allan Nevins from various correspondents including James Truslow Adams, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Harry S. Truman, Willa Cather, Frances Folsom Cleveland, Van Wyck Brooks, Robert Frost, Newton D. Baker, Archibald MacLeish, John D. Rockefeller, Jr., Carl Sandburg, and Henry Wallace; notes and typescripts for Nevins' books including Emergence of Lincoln, The Ordeal of Democracy, Rockefeller, and History and Historians, with notes by editor Ray A. Billington; miscellaneous transcripts, clippings, newspapers, and photographs. Also, autograph letters and manuscripts by presidents, Civil War figures, financiers, politicians, and authors. There are also the Brand Whitlock World War I Diaries and letters to him by such people as Herbert Hoover, Gen. John J. Pershing, and others.

Correspondence and works of Andre Racz, including one letter from Gabriela Mistral, 1952, a portrait of her (etching-aquatint), Ricz's etching (metal plate) for Mistral's POEMAS DE LAS MADRES (Santiago, Chile, 1950), a Christmas card, 1970, illustrated and signed by Racz, and a holograph of Thomas Merton's poem AUBADE--HARLEM, Racz's facsimile of this poem etched on a zinc plate, and his artist's proof pulled from the plate. Also, signature practice page for scroll presented to President Sovern by the Executive Committee of the Faculty in appreciation of his work as chairman, 1968.

The collection consists primarily of personal correspondence between members of the Barrell family in London, the United States, Barbados, and Demerara which was then a part of British Guiana. The collection also contains several family chronicles, a diary and cashbook belonging to Theodore Barrell, autograph albums belonging to Walter Newberry Barrell and Theodora Barrell, and photographs and silhouettes.

The extensive correspondence in the collection includes letters from Lewis Corey, Herbert Hoover, Sinclair Lewis, H.L. Mencken, Ayn Rand, Norman Thomas, and Leon Trotsky.

Fifty-eight letters, including three fragments of letters, from Berenson to Prince Paul of Yugoslavia (1893-1976), 1935-1949. The letters deal with art and esthetics, travel, international affairs, and the personal lives of Berenson and Prince Paul. All are autograph and signed with initials. Included are a postcard photograph of Berenson at ages twenty-one and seventy-one, and an autograph letter from Arthur Bliss Lane to Prince Paul.
