Woodcuts, part colored, of cartoons drawn by Alfred Frueh (1880-1968) of theatrical personalities: Maude Adams, George Arliss, Ethel Barrymore, George M. Cohan, Katharine Cornell, John Drew, Robert Edson, Lionel Erroll, Lew Fields, Yvette Gilbert, William Gillette, Nat Goodwin, Annette Kellerman, Wilton Lackaye, Julia Marlowe, Nazimova, Olga Petrova, Will Rogers, Fritzi Schiff, Fred Stone, Sophie Tucker, and unidentified.

Correspondence files and financial papers. The files include correspondence, contracts, clippings and programs, ledgers and financial accounts, submission books, and calendars and memorandum books. Authors for whom there are extensive files include the following: Truman Capote; Patrick Dennis; John Dos Passos; Lloyd C. Douglas; John Hersey; Alice Tisdale Hobart; Paul Horgan; William Humphrey; Frances Parkinson Keyes; Margaret Mitchell; Alan Paton; Kenneth Roberts; Lillian Smith; John Steinbeck; George R. Stewart; Ben Ames Williams; and Kathleen Winsor

A collection of letters, manuscripts, and documents of prominent actors, actresses, and theatrical managers. Many of these are single, unrelated items. The largest body of correspondence is from the American actress, Charlotte Cushman (14 letters). Another figure of major interest is William Charles Macready, partly because of Miss Cushman's relationship to him (she toured with him for several years) and also as there are several of his letters. Sir Henry Irving, Edwin Forrest and James Mowatt are each represented by a few letters. A group of 8 unsigned letters may have been written by the famous singer, actress, and manager, Eliza Vestris. One box contains manuscripts of Samuel Coit, Charlotte Cushman, Clyde Fitch, Wallace Gould, Henry von Heiseler, E.H. Sothern, and Lester Wallack. Six boxes contain Augustin Daly's check stubs and bank books for Daly's Theatre, New York, for 1872-1899. Correspondence, manuscripts, notecards, tabulation sheets, microfilms, photographs, and photostats. The bulk of the collection is made up of his Columbia University doctoral dissertation, THE OLD STOCK COMPANY SCHOOL OF ACTING; A STUDY OF THE BOSTON MUSEUM, and related research materials. The dissertation, published in 1945, uses the Bostom Museum Stock Company to exemplify the nature of American dramatic arts in the nineteenth century vis-a-vis professional theater organizations and their dual purpose of producing shows and training actors. The research materials appear in a variety of formats: chronological lists on notecards recording the actors that performed in particular plays; tabulation sheets that fulfill many purposes, such as recording each actor's experience, the roles the actors played, and the years that they were active with the company. Photographs include those taken of theater sets, actors in costume, and pictures of the Museum building. Photostats and microfilms are almost entirely reproductions of advertisements and flyers

This collection includes nine letters of Ralph Waldo Emerson as well as letters of Louis Agassiz, Amos Bronson Alcott, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr., Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, James Russell Lowell, John Lothrop Motley, Charles Sumner, and John Greenleaf Whittier. In addition, there are two incomplete manuscripts by Emerson and one document from the Liverpool Custom-house signed by Nathaniel Hawthorne as Consul for the United States. The collection also includes the corrected typescript, index, and page and galley proofs for Thomas Franklin Currier, A BIBLIOGRAPHY OF OLIVER WENDELL HOLMES (New York, 1953) which was edited by Professor Tilton. Also, some early correspondence and photographs of the Tilton family and friends. There are letters from the actors Annie Louise Ames, Richard J. Dillon, and Hans L. Meery to Tilton's grandfather, Bernard Paul Verne, as well as photographs, tintypes, and daguerreotypes of the Verne family and friends.

Letters, documents, and printed materials documenting Macy's publishing career, including that relating to the Nonesuch Press, dating from 1941 to 1960. Included also are photographs, awards, and financial papers. The correspondents include many of Macy's close friends including Peter Beilenson, William Rose Benét, Clifton Fadiman, Christopher Fry, Lillian Gish, Alec Guinness, Fritz Kredel, Frederic and Florence March, Francis Meynell, Bruce Rogers, Louis Untermeyer, Carl Van Doren, and Lynd Ward. Also, miscellaneous engravings, lithographs, and drawings. The collection also includes 3 series of books: Macy-Masius Readers Club, Readers Club and Heritage Press. Macy Memorial Limited Addition Club books were cataloged individually as MACYMEM

Letters to Herbert Machiz (1923-1976), a prominent theatrical director in New York. The correspondence includes items from well-known actors and authors, such as Truman Capote, Tennessee Williams, Yukio Mishima, Julie Harris, Paul Bowles, and Gian Carlo Menotti. The collection also includes newspaper articles on Mishima collected by Machiz, and an obituary of Machiz.

Manuscripts by Payne, including plays, poems, journals, essays, account books, correspondence, letter books (to and from) including a large group of letters from Washington Irving. Also, pictorial material, scrapbooks, biographies, portraits, passports, and other documents; and materials on the Cherokee incident, 1835-1838, and Payne's arrest in Georgia. Other material include letters of various members of the Payne family and of related families. Of greatest interest is a group of fine letters and manuscripts of Eloise Richards Payne (1787-1819), a sister of the playwright. These present a sensitive and revealing portrait of the social, cultural, and political life of the time. Among the manuscripts and documents are many items of genealogical interest on the Paine, Shippen, Lynch, Luquer, and Lea families. Two boxes of the papers of Col. Thatcher Taylor Payne Luquer contain correspondence on various aspects of John Howard Payne's career, and on "An Unconscious Autobiography" the letters and diaries of William Osborn Payne (1783-1804), a brother of the playwright, edited by Col. Luquer.

Black and white glass slides of theaters, actors, and actors in productions, portraits depicting contemporary costumes beginning with Greek amphitheaters. Most of the slides are from contemporary 19th-century prints.
