Abstract Or Scope
The Morningside Area Alliance is an organization working for community improvement on behalf of its member institutions in the Morningside Heights neighborhood in New York City. The organization was founded as Morningside Heights Inc. in 1947 through joint action of fourteen Morningside Institutions--Columbia University, St. Luke's Hospital, Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine, Teacher's College, Barnard College, Corpus Christi Church, Home for Old Men and Aged Couples, International House, Jewish Theological Seminary, Juilliard School of Music, St. Hilda's and St. Hugh's School, The Riverside Church, Union Theological Seminary, and the Women's Hospital of St. Luke's Center--with the expressed purpose of "[promoting] the improvement of Morningside Heights as an attractive, residential, educational, and cultural area." The collection includes much, if not all, of the material that was created by the organization as part of its daily business from 1947 to 1992, when the materials were accessioned into University Archives at Columbia University. This includes records of the Board of Directors and the various Committees within the Alliance; assorted publications, reports, pamphlets, and theses both acquired and created by the organization; files of the different offices within the organization; maps, plans, and photographs used and created by the Alliance for its work; and the collected materials and files created for the organization's projects in different subject areas--specifically buildings, community services and programs, public safety, schools, and the Morningside General Neighborhood Renewal Plan. The collection also includes a large quantity of material rearranged into subject files on different areas of concern within the organization.

Marie Runyon Papers, 1955-2008

Abstract Or Scope
Marie Runyon was an activist and former New York State legislator. Born in North Carolina in 1915, she moved to Morningside Heights and in 1963 began a decades long fight against Columbia University over its real estate practices and expansion in the neighborhood. Runyon founded the Morningside Tenants Committee as well as other tenants' organizations, and she brought a number of cases to court to prevent her eviction from her apartment at 130 Morningside Drive. She also worked for many political and service organizations throughout her career.

The surviving files of official correspondence, reports, documents, and printed materials of King's College from 1750 to 1784 and Columbia College from 1785 to 1890, as well as Columbia University up to 1964. The King's College era materials include grants, deeds, indentures, lists of governors, leases, accounts, etc. The Columbia College era papers commence with documentation regarding the attempts to revive the college at the end of the American Revolution. In the later period these papers primarily supplement and document the minutes of the meetings of the Board of Governors and the Board of Trustees. Much material was destroyed and scattered in the late 19th century leaving this collection quite incomplete.

Abstract Or Scope

Letters written by Charity Clarke Moore and one letter and a diary written by her son Clement Clarke Moore. Charity Moore's letters range in date from 1767 to 1834 and were written to her sister, Lady Mary Clarke Vassal Affleck and other members of her family and friends. They are personal in nature dealing with family affairs and day to day events. Of the same character is Clement Moore's letter which was written to his cousin, Lady Mary Elizabeth Fox Powys Lilford in November 1840. The diary contains brief entries from 20 November 1856 to 8 July 1863, two days before his death. It is mainly a record of the weather, the temperature, and his benefactions. The letters are all mounted on the blank leaves of one volume and the diary occupies a second volume. Also included are nine volumes from the library of Benjamin Moore.

This collection consists of two sets of records originating in the Office of the Registrar. A set of published annual reports containing statistical information concerning enrollment and graduates from 1924 through 1976. There is also a collection of 62 bound volumes noting matriculation status and sometimes grade and course information for students enrolled in Columbia College, the Graduate Faculties, Summer Session, Faculty of Fine Arts (Department of Music and Architecture) from the late 19th century to the early 20th century. Collection also includes matriculation receipt books from the early 1890s and some statistical information from Seth Low Junior College (1929-1936). Three volumes from 1785 to 1896 contain matriculation information for Columbia College students. Similar volumes documenting students enrolled in the School of Law and the College of Physicians and Surgeons were transferred to the Archives & Special Collections at the School of Law and the Medical School, respectively.

Faculty meeting minutes include information on admissions, the academic calendar, curricular changes, faculty appointments and leaves, student petitions, fellowships, grants, prizes, and graduation requirements among other topics. Unfortunately, this collection is not complete. Additional minutes can be found in the record collections of the different faculties. For example, there is complete set of the minutes of the Faculty of Columbia College in the Columbia College records. Similarly, the minutes of the Seth Low Junior College and the minutes for the New York School of Social Work can be found in their respective collections.

The volumes relate the events of the Columbia College Canoe Club's 6-week summer cruises on Lake George, Lake Champlain, Richelieu River, St. Lawrence River, and Thousand Islands in summer 1886. In summer 1887, the Canoe Club had a permanent camp at Little Harbor Island, Lake George.

Most of the correspondence dates between 1890 and 1912 and addresses requests for matriculation and fellowships, while other areas of consideration include departmental issues, personnel issues, and lists of fellowship and degree recipients. Correspondence with University administrators concerns faculty appointments, enrollment and registration concerns, and class scheduling. Outgoing correspondence of the Dean and Secretary addresses fellowship and scholarship options in attempts to fund specific students, as well as attempts to secure teaching positions for graduating students.

Originally compiled by the Office of the Secretary and later by the Academic Appointments Office, this card catalogue contains a record of all appointment letters sent to faculty members beginning in the 1890s. The cards include the appointees' name, degrees, and a record of each appointment (rank, school and academic year). For faculty and officers of research, the last date on the cards is June 30, 1990. For officers of administration, there are cards with information through July 1987. The cards are divided between inactive (last appointment ended before June 1990) and active (still at Columbia in 1990). The active appointments are also subdivided by school or division.
