Correspondence, memoranda, notes, lists, manuscripts, photographs, and printed material. The records also include administrative files from Baker's tenure as Dean of the Graduate School of the Journalism, 1961-1970, as well as course materials, and data for journalism conferences.

Writers represented in the correspondence files are Margaret Anderson, Sherwood Anderson, George Antheil, Djuna Barnes, Clive Bell, Malcolm Cowley, E.E. Cummings, John Dos Passos, Ford Madox Ford, Ernest Hemingway, Richard Hughes, Eugene Jolas, Archibald MacLeish, H.L. Mencken, Henry Miller, Adrienne Monnier, Man Ray, Elmer Rice, Jules Romains, Gertrude Stein, John Steinbeck, Allen Tate, Carl Van Vechten, Robert Penn Warren, and Edmund Wilson. Galantiere's best known work as a translator was that of the writings of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, and the collection contains in addition to correspondence, twelve manuscripts, all bearing the author's and the translator's corrections. He also wrote extensively on economic subjects and current history, and these files and manuscripts are present in the collection. Galantiere wrote plays in his own name and adapted Jean Anouilh's ANTIGONE for Katharine Cornell in 1946, and there are materials relating to these works.

Correspondence, manuscripts, typescripts, notes, reports, memoranda, documents, and printed materials relating to Friess' dual career. The correspondence files include letters from professors of religion and philosophy at Columbia and other universities; from his students; letters dealing with Columbia academic matters; letters with related reports and memoranda concerning his membership in the Society for the Scientific Study of Religion and the American Council of Learned Societies Committee on the History of Religion, the latter concerned with lectures on Chinese religions by Wing-Tsit Chan in 1950 and on Islam by Louis Massignon in 1952. The academic writings of Friess consist of manuscripts, typescripts, manuscript notes, course materials, and other items relating to his teaching, research, publishing and other activities and associations at Columbia. Religion and philosophy are the chief topics, particularly German philosophy. There are numerous manuscripts submitted to Friess by colleagues and students, including three lengthy ones by Dr. Arno Carl Coutinho.

The correspondence, papers, and documents relating to Franklins' work in the fields of psychology and logic. The papers are mainly those of Christine Ladd Franklin. Among the selected autographs are fourteen letters from Henry Holt to Fabian Franklin and four letters from Bertrand Russell to Christine Ladd Franklin.

Series I: Writing Projects contains manuscripts, proofs, and correspondence pertaining to Dr. Peter Gay's award-winning study "The Enlightenment: An Interpretation" as well as his files for the numerous essays, reviews, books, and anthologies he published during the period (1954-1969). Series II: The Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Center for Scholars and Writers encompasses Dr. Gay's correspondence as Director of the Cullman Center. In 1997, Gay was named founding director of The Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Center for Scholars and Writers at the New York Public Library. The center opened in 1999 with a focus on scholarship about human society. In 2003, Dr. Gay retired as director.

The collection consists of the manauscripts of Fuhrmann's articles, notes, and related items on the history of printing and graphic arts. A great many of Fuhrmann's articles were about Johann Gutenberg. There is also correspondence, primarily with people well known in the printing trade.

Correspondence, lecture notes, and drafts and manuscripts of his numerous articles, essays, and books.

Ginsberg's papers are mostly the manuscripts and clippings of his poetry and prose writings, class notes for his courses at Rutgers, clippings of interviews and other publicity materials for his joint poetry readings with Allen Ginsberg, and many books from his library. Also included are ten letters from Ginsberg to Louis Untermeyer regarding Ginsberg's poetry; and four letters from Gisnberg to Stanley Wertheim.

Thirty-three notebooks containing transcriptions of Native American texts by Pliny Earle Goddard, and some English translations. While some of the material is of a primarily linguistic nature, much is folkloric in nature. The collection contains eleven notebooks of Mescalero Apache texts; three notebooks of Pomo, Maple Creek, and Mad River tribes and four of the Coquille, Chasta Costa, and Tututni languages (Native American tribes from the Pacific Coast); five notebooks of Navajo texts; and ten notebooks of Sarsi texts. It also includes 23 pages of notes on Chasta Costa attributed to Edward Sapir.

Autograph letters with some typed copies, manuscripts and documents of the Goldmark family in Europe and America. These are primarily family letters, often descriptive of places visited and of current events. The bulk of the material concerns Joseph Goldmark. Also included are a few letters from his brother Carl, manuscripts of some of Pauline's horticultural works, and genealogical material about the Goldmark family.

The unpublished biography of Glenn. In addition to the original 404 page typescript "John Mark Glenn -- and First Steps Toward Better Living Conditions" by Shelby Millard Harrison, a Sage Foundation staff member, there are photographs of Glenn, printed matters, and medals awarded to him and Mary Willcox (Brown) Glenn.

Syrett, and his staff concerning the operations, activities, gathering of data, photocopies, and microfilm reproductions of letters, manuscripts, and documents by, to, and about Alexander Hamilton and selected and edited for publication by Columbia University Press as THE PAPERS OF ALEXANDER HAMILTON (New York, 1961-1970). Also, the corrected typescript copies of texts to be published, photocopies of letters, manuscripts, and documents by, to, and about Alexander Hamilton; microfilms of manuscript materials in a variety of repositories; and photocopies of newspaper articles relating to Hamilton.

Correspondence, typescripts, research notes, index cards, photocopies, and photographs of THE LAW PRACTICE OF ALEXANDER HAMILTON publication project, 1961-1981. These editorial research files of Julius Ludwig Goebel, Joseph Henry Smith, and their staff contain research notes with related correspondence, edited typescript drafts of parts of the published volumes, typescript copies, and photoreproductions of autograph letters, manuscripts, and documents collected by the editors for use in their publication THE LAW PRACTICE OF ALEXANDER HAMILTON.

Papers of John Church Hamilton, consisting of transcripts of his father's letters and papers, and his own notes, drafts, and manuscripts of his biography of his father, THE LIFE OF ALEXANDER HAMILTON, and of his HISTORY OF THE REPUBLIC. The collection is of particular importance because it contains copies of letters for which the location of the originals is unknown since the time when John Church Hamilton made his transcripts. These include letters from generals of the Continental Army, from the French Expeditionary forces, and from others who played important roles in the American Revolution and the period which followed.

Files of Hamlin, dealing with the American Library Association's (ALA) aid to Italian libraries to help them restore book manuscripts and other library materials after the 1966 floods in Florence. These papers contain correspondence with American and Italian librarians and related memoranda and reports. In addition there are photographs, clippings, pamphlets, monographs, and serials documenting the flood, its aftermath and restoration efforts. The chief correspondents are Paul N. Correspondence, manuscripts, and miscellany relating to the presentation of poems at a Shakespeare's Birthday Concert on 23 April 1972, by a number of British poets including W.H. Auden, C. Day Lewis, Robert Graves, and Stephen Spender. The collection consists primarily of correspondence with the poets involved; several manuscripts of poems both presented at and eliminated from the program; some business correspondence of the Globe Playhouse Trust and Calder and Boyars, Ltd., Publishers; and Hampton's notes.

The files are particularly strong for authors included in two important historical series"The New American Nation" Richard B. Morris and Henry S. Commager, editors; and "The Rise of Modern Europe" William L. Langer, editor. The files of Cass Canfield Sr. contain substantial material on Planned Parenthood and International Planned Parenthood.
