Vladimir Vostokov Manuscripts, 1945-1953

Abstract Or Scope

Manuscripts of Vostokov. Following the 1917 revolution, Vostokov served as a chaplain for the White Army, and was later sent abroad by General Wrangel because he was preaching that the Jews were responsible for the revolution. The manuscripts in the collection are chiefly memoirs and pertain not only to the revolution and Civil War, but to a number of important church figures as well. The printed materials consist of two copies of Vostokov's pamphlet"Rozy i shipy" (San Francisco, 1953).

Stepan Vasil'evich Vostrotin Papers, 1919-1942

Abstract Or Scope

Correspondence, manuscripts, documents, photographs, subject files and printed materials of Vostrotin. The correspondence dates from 1919 to 1942. The manuscripts are chiefly by Vostrotin, and primarily consist of memoirs. Among the subjects he treats in his memoirs are: the building of the Chinese-Eastern railroad, gold mining along the Eniseĭ River in Siberia, the creation of the North Sea route, various Siberian explorations, the Civil War in the Far East, and Russian emigration to the Far East, with reference to the Russian newspaper "Russkiĭ golos" in Harbin, of which Vostrotin was editor of the 1920's. There are a few documents and subject files relating to the same topics. The printed materials contain several dozen maps.

Correspondents include Tati︠́a︡na Dubrovskai︠a︡, Nikolaĭ Obruchev, Vasiliĭ Orekhov, Igor ́Sikorskiĭ, Boris Solonevich, and many others; there are also memoirs by Voĭt︠s︡ekhovskiĭ on emigres whom he knew. There are files on the Rossiĭskiĭ Politicheskiĭ Komitet (Russian Political Committee) in New York; on the Pushkin Fund; extensive materials concerning emigre monarchist and anti-Communist groups (for example, the Solidarists); and reviews of the Russian emigre press ("Obzor pressy") prepared by Voĭt︠s︡ekhovskiĭ in 1962-1975.

Correspondence, manuscripts and printed materials of Boris Petrovich Vysheslavtsev. There are letters from Nikolai Berdiaev, Carl Jung, Anton Kartashev, Konstantin Korovin, Jacques Maritain, Aleksei Remizov, Grigol Robakidze, Theodore Strawinsky, and Ariadna Tyrkova-Williams. The manuscripts include essays and lectures on various topics including the Orthodox church, Russian literature and culture, philosophy, and the hereafter. There are numerous diaries, primarily from the 1930's and 1940's. The printed materials include clippings, off-prints, and various journals and books.

Roosevelt; Carl Sandburg; George Bernard Shaw; and Adlai Stevenson. In several cases the correspondent's purpose is to decline an invitation offered by Mr. Wagner. Allen Wardwell Papers, 1917-1941

Papers of Wardwell. These papers chiefly concern the 1917-1918 American Red Cross Mission to Russia, in which Wardwell served, and his involvement in efforts to support trade with and aid to Russia in 1919-1924; he was chairman of the Russian Famine Fund in that period. There are a few items concerning the 1941 W.A. Harriman-Lord Beaverbrook mission to Russia, in which Wardwell participated. Materials on the Red Cross Mission are chiefly from May-October 1918, when Wardwell commanded it; they consist of correspondence, reports, documents, many photographs, and transcribed excerpts from Wardwell's diary and letters home. Major correspondents include Georgiĭ Chicherin, Lev Trot︠s︡kiĭ, and Raymond Robins. Records of Wardwell's efforts in regard to Russia in 1919-1924 consist of extensive correspondence files with prominent Americans, such as Robins and Herbert Hoover, manuscripts, related printed materials, and Wardwell's diary of his trip to Russia in the fall of 1922.

There is also correspondence regarding her "English constitutional theory" and other professional and personal matters. Items written by or relating to the American poet Walt Whitman (1819-1892) as collected by Williams. There are three autograph letters signed from Whitman to Williams, 1884, 1887, n.d., regarding contributions by the poet to the PHILADELPHIA PRESS, as well as one postal card dated 1890. Also, two proofs of poems with corrections in Whitman's hand and four envelopes; a broadside containing lines from Whitman's poetry, five pages of manuscript notes on remarks made by Whitman on some occasion, two letters, one manuscript receipt, and three printed items concerned with a speech by Whitman, a testimonial, the choice of a speaker for his funeral, and the proposal to purchase the house in which he died, for a memorial. There are two prospectuses for books about the poet, and two placards advertising his books.

Also, the author's pen-and-ink rough sketch of the set. The playscripts and drafts are mainly photo-offset, typescript, and carbon typescript. There are also notes, a revision, photographs, and playbill for the production at the Festival dei due Mondi, Spoleto, July 1962.

As David Wise's reputation grew as an internationally respected author with impeccable integrity in the world of espionage and intelligence, his access to high level source material evolved to unduplicatable levels. The archive contains a substantive degree of primary source interviews and correspondence, with a considerable amount never before published.

A collection of manuscripts pertaining to the social and business history of the John Wyles family. The more important earlier letters in the collection, 1795-1805, indicate the commercial and speculative interest, largely in real estate, John Wyles had in the newly settled territory of the Western Reserve. The subsequent letters and manuscripts including deeds, receipts, and miscellaneous papers, are concerned with the financial and business history of the Wyles family throughout the several generations from 1800 through 1903.
