Two playscripts of THE MILKTRAIN DOESN'T STOP HERE ANYMORE along with numerous drafts of the play's six scenes. Many of the pages bear cuts, corrections, and alterations by Williams. Also, the author's pen-and-ink rough sketch of the set. The playscripts and drafts are mainly photo-offset, typescript, and carbon typescript. There are also notes, a revision, photographs, and playbill for the production at the Festival dei due Mondi, Spoleto, July 1962.

Walt Whitman documents, 1884-1890

Items written by or relating to the American poet Walt Whitman (1819-1892) as collected by Williams. There are three autograph letters signed from Whitman to Williams, 1884, 1887, n.d., regarding contributions by the poet to the PHILADELPHIA PRESS, as well as one postal card dated 1890. Also, two proofs of poems with corrections in Whitman's hand and four envelopes; a broadside containing lines from Whitman's poetry, five pages of manuscript notes on remarks made by Whitman on some occasion, two letters, one manuscript receipt, and three printed items concerned with a speech by Whitman, a testimonial, the choice of a speaker for his funeral, and the proposal to purchase the house in which he died, for a memorial. There are two prospectuses for books about the poet, and two placards advertising his books.

The manuscripts are mainly concerned with the President's House, John Jay Hall and the Brander Matthews Dramatic Museum. There are several photographs of Williams during his college years and with other members of the Victorian Society. There are several drawings and both Williams' BLitt degree certification and his Distinguished Classmate Award.

Correspondence, subject files, manuscripts and printed materials documenting the work of C. Martin Wilbur, George Sansom Professor Emeritus of Chinese History, Columbia University. Correspondence with non-Columbia organizations includes the Institute of Pacific Relations, Far Eastern Association, INDUSCO, Council on Foreign Relations, Asia Foundation, and American Council of Learned Societies, among others. Subject files relevant to Columbia University include items pertaining to the Department of Chinese and Japanese, later renamed the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures, as well as teaching files, student files and research projects directed. The manuscript files contain the notes and, in some cases, printed copies of published and unpublished works and public talks. Wilbur's writings and research concentrate on the history and politics of twentieth century China, with emphasis on the Chinese Revolution, 1920-1929, Sun Yat-sen, and communism in China. There are translations of minutes for the first and second Kuomintang Congresses, copies of documents from the Kuomintang Archives, and photographs of members of the Young China Party, Sun Yat-sen and several historical events in the 1920s. Files on fund raising efforts for the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures and the Wellington Koo Fellowship also contain relevant correspondence. This collection belonged to an award-winning horror writer who worked for Mirage Studios (the TMNT studio) in the early 1990s, writing the TMNT newspaper strip. There is original art for never-reprinted newspaper strips (1993) complete with thumbnails, comic book manuscripts with editorial notation, story idea notebooks, minicomics produced by Mirage Studios, and manuscript materials for a host of secondary TMNT materials, including The Official TMNT Treasury. Many of the secondary materials are autographed by TMNT creators Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird.

Also included in this collection are community dialogues on race relations (1974-1975); proposed dialogues (1979) on such subjects as the Boy Scouts of America, Columbia University, and the National Council of Christians and Jews; and files on the Whitney M. Young Fellows Retreat Conferences (1980-1984). The collection contains many files on Ed Wilson's bust of Young (1991), including contracts and agreements, records of payments to Wilson, documents concerning the bust's placement in various locations, correspondence with Wilson (1983-1991), and miscellaneous photographs and pictures. The collection consists of addresses, press releases, memoranda proclamations, and other papers by and in regard to Charles Seymour Whitman (1868-1347) who was the District Attorney of New York County from 1910 to 1914 and Governor of New York State from 1915 to 1918. The material ranges in date from 1910 to 1937. The material is confined for the most part to drafts of the Governor's speeches to various groups on such subjects as the NEW YORK STATE PENAL CODE, unification of state laws, public health, education, and agriculture. Also, a typed memorandum on Whitman's ancestry and a few miscellaneous items. There are not papers or correspondence of a personal nature in the collection. The material is mostly in typescript. There is also a microfilm of Lt. Charles F. Becker's testimony in the Rosenthal murder case.

Thomas Whiteside was an American journalist born in 1918. Whiteside wrote for The New Yorker for over 45 years. He covered such topics in his articles and books as cable television, the cigarette industry, the channel tunnel, chemical weapons (notably 2, 4, 5-T, a component of Agent Orange), Ralph Nader, Stig Wennerstrom, and yellow rain. It has been said that Whiteside's work on Agent Orange led directly to the congressional hearings which discussed the dangers of the substance. By the end of the hearings, the Surgeon General of the United States had announced restrictions on the use of the herbicide. The collection contains material related to the articles that Whiteside contributed to The New Yorker. The files include audiocassettes, book reviews, correspondence, drafts, galleys, notebooks and notes, research files, and typescripts. There is a small section of the collection that contains personal papers not tied directly to specific articles or books. The material ranges in date from the 1950s to the 1990s, spanning the time Whiteside worked at The New Yorker.

Correspondence, manuscripts, and notes. The correspondence consists of a selected file for 1936-40; 1942-43, in 5 bound volumes documenting White's career as Librarian at Fisk University, the University of North Carolina and the University of Illinois. Among the correspondence are Robert B. Downs, Louis Round Wilson, and William Warner Bishop, as well as numerous other college and university librarians and presidents. Also includes photocopies of correspondence (11 items, 1947-48) relating to the library school program at Columbia University, specifically the creation of a full professorship for a specialist in the "foundation of librarianship" and correspondence (24 items, 1961-65) relating to White's activities in Nigeria as program specialist in library administration for the Ford Foundation. There are three mimeographed copies of bibliographies by White et al.: "Sources of Information in Economics, Business and Labor: a Bibliography;" "Social Psychology;" and "Political Science" as well as handwritten notes for same. These bibliographies were used in his course work for the School of Library Service. Also included are 2 offprints concerning the education for librarianship; one photograph and 2 postcards of different university libraries.

Theatrical memorabilia such as programs, playbills, photographs, engravings, and prints. Although there are some playbills as early as 1770, most of the material is from the 19th and 20th centuries. In addition to plays there is some material relating to concerts, operettas, musical comedies, musical revues, and movies. The majority of the collection centers around Shakespeare. Included with an unbound copy of each play (The Edinburgh Shakespeare Folio Edition) there are portraits, engravings, and photographs of actors in their roles; playbills; programs; cast lists; other types of illustrative material; reviews of various productions; and other printed material. Such well known names as George Arliss, Sarah Bernhardt, the Booths, John Drew, the Barrymores, and William Gillette are included in this collection.

Also, 393 letters representing Mr. Wheeler's side of the correspondence; and a group of miscellaneous items including a collection of clipped autographs formed by Elizabeth Wheeler.

Professor of History at Columbia, 1911-1951; Editor of the Political Science Quarterly, 1919-1921, Columbia Studies in History, Economics, and Public Law, 1923-1929 & 1944-1948, American Historical Review, 1936-1941"Dictionary of American Biography, Supplement II, 1935-1940" 1954-1958) regarding the volumes they coauthored. There is also correspondence regarding her "English constitutional theory" and other professional and personal matters. There is also a manuscript copy of Schuyler's article"Some twentieth-century revisions in medieval constitutional history" and a small amount of printed material. Biographical information about Schuyler can be found attached to Weston's letter of 5 February 1961 to him.
