Correspondence, manuscripts, notes, clippings, and photographs of or relating to Cardozo, including his lecture notes as a student at Columbia, 1885-1889, and his commonplace books. Also, four boxes of printed and manuscript material collected by George S. Hellman while writing BENJAMIN N. Correspondence, manuscripts, documents, reports, and printed material of Hughes. The papers cover primarily the period following Hughes' defeat in the 1916 presidential election up to his appointment as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court in 1930; in most files there is a gap from March 1921 to March 1925, when Hughes was Secretary of State. Some materials relate to the law firm of Hughes, Rounds, Schurman and Dwight (later Hughes, Schurman and Dwight), but primarily concern Hughes' philanthropies and activities in professional organizations. Among these latter associations are the American Bar Association, the Association of the Bar of the City of New York, the Legal Aid Society, and the New York State Bar Association. Records for a number of Hughes' cultural, educational, and international philanthropies, such as the Armenian National Union of America and the George Washington Memorial Association, are included as are materials on his participation in the 1918-1924 aircraft investigation, the Sixth Pan American Conference (Havana, 1928), and the Permanent Court of International Justice, the Hague.

A collection of letters addressed to Russell Potter, Director of the Institute of Arts & Sciences, relating to speaking engagerents and conferences. The correspondence, dated 1930-1945, includes letters from Gertrude Stein, Robert Frost, Edna Ferber, Al Smith, Henry Wallace, Anthony Eden, and Harold Laski. Some of the letters are of a personal nature.

Correspondence, reports, memoranda, case records, photographs and printed material. The archive include central and district administrative records; cammittee correspondence and minutes; and files on the various programs--such as sheltered workshops, tuberculosis sanitariums and health centers, public baths and employment bureaus--run by the two organizations. The archive also contains hundreds of photographs, including works by Lewis Hine and Jessie Tarbox Beals; extensive casework files from the beginning of social work (originally referred to as "friendly visiting among the poor"); and copies of masters and doctoral theses from the New York School of Sociel Work and other schools. Much of the research for these theses was based on the CSS files

This collection contains reprographic architectural drawings for the Empire State Building; photographs of the demolition of the original Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, which occupied the Fifth Avenue site; photographs of the Empire State Building under construction, circa 1930-1931 (one photograph shows former governor Alfred E. Smith standing in the building during construction), including 232 photographs by photographer Lewis Hine; photographs showing the building after completion, circa 1931-1956; scrapbooks of clippings of articles about the building, 1930-1957; and illustrations of the Empire State Building, circa 1930s-1960s. Correspondence, book orders, invoices, bills, and receipts dealing with the purchase of books by American, Canadian, British, Australian, and a few Western European institutions and individuals. There are approximately 100 letters from writers and critics such as John Ciardi, Leon Edel, Wallace Fowlie, Robert McAlmon, Alfred E. Smith, William Carlos Williams, and Edmund Wilson. Financial records for the years, 1960-1975, document the operating costs of the shop. Included among these records are many bills from booksellers and auction houses for Gramercy's purchases.

The general files, minutes, and reports reflect the varied activities and interests of the League, including apportionment, court reform, education, and voting rights. The historical files contain photographs, printed materials, and memorabilia, filed chronologically. Also included are the periodicals and publications of the League, scrapbooks arranged chronologically, and "Mailbooks", or volumes of mimeographed reports and announcements which were sent to branches and board members. Averell Harriman, to Rosenman and his wife, Dorothy, one letter by Henry Clay to H. Shaw 23 Sept. 1826 collected by Rosenman, invitations to official social functions, two sets of proofs for political pamphlets written by Rosenman on behalf of New York Governor Alfred E. Smith, photographic and lithographic portraits of political acquaintances signed and inscribed to Rosenman, including those of Dwight D. Eisenhower, W. Averell Harriman, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Harry S. Truman. Other correspondents include Charles A. Beard, Louis D. Brandeis, Dwight D. Eisenhower, and Wendell Willkie. Also, thirteen books dealing with the Roosevelt administration signed and inscribed by the authors.
