The collection consists of letters from celebrities in various fields, largely addressed to Harry Harkness Flagler. Included are letters of Ambrose Bierce, Thomas A. Edison, Edwin Forrest, Andrew Jackson, Rudyard Kipling, Richard Mansfield, John D. Rockefeller, Franklin D. Roosevelt, John Ruskin, Constantin Stanislavsky, and George Washington. Especially noteworthy are five letters of Charles Dickens, bound together in one volume.

Letters from John Ruskin to his friend and publisher, George Allen. A note in front of volume I states that "Ruskin wrote in all over 1,300 letters to George Allen" of which these are a part. The men were close friends and the correspondence contains both personal matter and that relating to artistic and business matters.

The collection consists of 124 letters from Count Leo Tolstoy and members of his family to Aylmer Maude, the English translator of his works. There are 69 letters from Count Leo Tolstoy, eighteen letters from Countess Tolstaia, eleven letters from Sergei Tolstoi (his son), 25 letters from his four daughters, Alexandra, Olga, Marya, and Tatiana, and one letter from Anna Konstantinovna Chertkova. The letters deal with such subjects as "What is art?", the "Resurrection" fund, Tolstoy's health, censorship, Ruskin, the banishment of the Dukhobors to Siberia, Tolstoy's doctrine of non-resistance, Jewish pogroms, famine in Russia, murder of Alexander II, etc. There are letters from the countess which reflect her feelings about the Chertkov's connection with Tolstoy and a letter from Sergei informing Maude that Tolstoy had left home to die, 1910. Subsequent letters deal with posthumous publications of Tolstoy's works.

Correspondence, manuscripts, documents, financial records, photographs, drawings, engravings, and printed materials of Benjamin. The personal and business papers concern Benjamin's publishing and bookselling company, his numerous benefactions, the disposal of his collections, and many printed catalogs for his company, 1883-1940. The two major correspondents are the business and financial records for the printing, binding, and extensive promotion through a network of agents of Stedman's A LIBRARY OF AMERICAN LITERATURE FROM THE EARLIEST SETTLEMENT TO THE PRESENT TIME; new ed. (New York, W.E. Benjamin, 1894). There are also letters, manuscripts, documents, and drawings of English literary figures collected by Benjamin. Among these are six letters of George Eliot, 47 letters and six manuscripts of John Ruskin, and three letters and one manuscript of Joseph Mallord Turner, with four letters relating to the artist. In addition there ten drawings and watercolors by Ruskin.
