1.5 linear feetA collection of letters from authors, critics, and scholars, primarily relating to lectureships and courses given under the auspices of the English Department. Some of the correspondence, notably the ten letters from Amy Lowell, deal with essays written for the revised edition of C.D. Warner's LIBRARY OF THE WORLD'S BEST LITERATURE. The letters are written to Ashley H. Thorndike, John W. Cunliffe, George R. Carpenter, Ernest H. Wright, and Marjorie Nicolson. The correspondents include John Mason Brown, Marchette Chute, Robert P. Tristram Coffin, Padraic Colum, Bernard DeVoto, T.S. Eliot, John Erskine, Robert Frost, Otto Jespersen, Howard Mumford Jones, Joyce Kilmer, Ludwig Lewishon, Amy Lowell, Archibald MacLeish, Thomas Mann, Brander Matthews, H.L. Mencken, Christopher Morley, Ezra Pound, Theodore Roosevelt, Charles P. Snow, Allen Tate, Robert Penn Warren, and Edmund Wilson. Two boxes of miscellaneous uncataloged correspondence cover the years, 1896-1917, and a folder for the 1935 Mark Twain Centennial sponsored by the English Department. The correspondence is chiefly with Ernest Hunter Wright.

11 linear feetThe collection comprises materials authored by D'Arcy Hayman, including letters, invitations, essays, poetry, drawings, photographs, three monographs, proofs for one monograph, journals, and three scrapbooks. The three scrapbooks are referred to as 1, 2, and 3 (1 is a photo album, while 2 and 3 contain miscellanies: essays, drawings, poems, cards, photos, newsletters, conference materials, air travel documents, clippings, post-cards, festive cup holders, and a one-act play).
Ernest W. Nelson papers, 1899-1921
3 boxesNotebooks filled with Nelson's ideas and notes on art and poetry, as well as various other subjects, such as translations, women, liberty and democracy, and Americanization, which last shows his bitterness at not having achieved recognition as a creative artist in this country. Also included are quotations from numerous writers (including Samuel Loveman's "The triumph of anarchy" copied from the author's manuscript), with his criticisms on several of them (Stagnelius, a Swedish poet, Amy Lowell, Swinburne, Ezra Pound), on Gounod and Berlioz, on the sculptor Flaxman, and on Nietzsche. There are drafts of letters to various people, and to newspaper editors. Of particular interest is the letter to Hart Crane (see Notebook 1920 November-1921 June), circa May 1921, on whom he had considerable influence, even though their friendship was of brief duration.

1 linear feetManuscripts and correspondence. The typescript of THE PISAN CANTOS contains almost all of the Cantos 74-80, and 84, and part of 83. There is a carbon of the corrected version of parts of Cantos 74, 76-77, and 79-80. Included are galley proofs of Cantos 74-84 and galley and page proofs of Canto 77, the latter for the "Rocky Mountain Review." The collection contains two typescripts for CANTOS ET POEMES CHOISIS. One typescript bears corrections and notations by Pound, the other by the translator René Laubiès. Included is correspondence with Benjamin De Casseres, Daniel Dodson, Peter Loving, Dudley Fitts, Ronald Duncan, Orrick Johns, and a Mr. Thring.

35 Linear FeetCorrespondence, manuscripts, diaries, notebooks, and publications. The many manuscripts reflect Barzun's interest in poetry, literature and political affairs. The collection also contains materials for the journal, Art et Action which Barzun helped to found; lecture notes, 1933-1952; and a few items pertaining to Filippo Tommaso Marinetti and the Futurists. There are some Barzun family papers, as well. The correspondents are primarily French and American authors including André Breton, Katherine Dreier, Marcel Duchamp, Georges Duhamel, Albert Gleizes, Ivan Goll, Harriet Monroe, Ezra Pound, Pierre Reverdy, Edgar Varèse, Gabriel d'Annunzio, and Felippo Tommaso Marinetti.

Farrell, one containing holograph drafts of poems, and the other being a carbon copy typescript of various chapters from WHAT TIME COLLECTS. Also, approximately 65 letters from Ella Winter in the late 1930s, discussing politics, writing, and their social circle; approximately 25 letters from Laura Riding written in the late 1970s on language and, in particular, her book RATIONAL DEFINITION; and letters from James T. Farrell, Granville Hicks, Richard Rovere, and others.
