The archive include central and district administrative records; cammittee correspondence and minutes; and files on the various programs--such as sheltered workshops, tuberculosis sanitariums and health centers, public baths and employment bureaus--run by the two organizations. The archive also contains hundreds of photographs, including works by Lewis Hine and Jessie Tarbox Beals; extensive casework files from the beginning of social work (originally referred to as "friendly visiting among the poor"); and copies of masters and doctoral theses from the New York School of Sociel Work and other schools. Correspondence, manuscripts, dispatches, documents, clippings and other printed materials concerning his career as an editor and correspondent for the New York Herald Tribune in Moscow, Berlin and New York, as a staff member of the Institute of Pacific Relations from 1932 to 1934, as deputy director in the Office of War Information overseas branch, 1941-44, as an owner and editor of the New York Star, 1948-49, as an instructor in communications at Sarah Lawrence College, 1950-1951, as a book editor at Simon and Schuster, Publishers, 1951-1970, and as an author and translator.

Correspondents include Louis D. Brandeis, Felix Frankfurter, Ben W. Huebsch, Paul U. Kellogg, Harold J. Laski, Frances Perkins, and Gifford Pinchot.

Correspondence and manuscripts including drafts, typescripts, and proofs of Franken's short stories, novels, plays, and radio, film, and television scripts beginning with her first novel, PATTERN, published in 1925, through her latest volume, YOU'RE WELL OUT OF A HOSPITAL, published in 1966. Many of the manuscripts relate to her most famous characters, Claudia and David, who have become part of the contemporary cultural fabric. The collection also contains 18 volumes of clippings, approximately 200 recordings, and 501 mimeographed scripts relating to the "Claudia" series. Among the major correspondents are Faith Baldwin, Paul U. Kellogg, and Eleanor Roosevelt. Also includes an audio tape interview of Rose Franken (with typescript transcripts) conducted by her grandnephew, David Korr, in October 1977.

Cover designs; original art work for illustrations, vignettes, charts, and mastheads; prints and photographs from the files of THE SURVEY. The collection consists primarily of art work for SURVEY GRAPHIC; some material for MIDMONTHLY is also included. SURVEY GRAPHIC included articles on broad social issues, including public health, world peace, welfare, labor conditions, and government regulations. It had striking pictorial covers, and was extensively illustrated with drawings, cartoons, reproductions of contemporary prints, and photographs, all represented in the collection. The cataloged artists include Wilfred Jones and Hendrik Willem Van Loon.
