Correspondence, manuscripts, original drawings and sketches, and memorabilia of Reinhart. Of the 247 letters in the collection, a number are from E.A. Abbey, William Dean Howells, and Henry James. There are eight original drawings and sketches and two sketchbooks, as well as numerous photostats and clippings of his works that appeared in magazines. Also, a group of letters to the artist's son, C. Stanley Reinhart, relating to the disposition of various paintings to galleries and museums throughout the country.

Correspondence of Emma Lazarus. While the letters are primarily of a personal nature, they also reflect both her literary career and, after the traumatic effect on her of the perssecution of Russian Jews, 1879-1883, her role as American champion of Jews. There are original autograph letters from John Burroughs, Ralph W. Emerson, Henry James, William Morris, Tommaso Salvini, and Ivan Turgenev, and twenty other prominent figures. Also, one letter from Lazarus to William Wetmore Story and the letter of her sister, Annie Johnstone, presenting this collection to Columbia University.

The collection contains correspondence with the authors, including contracts signed with authors as well as negotiations with the authors over various aspects of publishing their works; financial records documenting many aspects of the operation of Harper & Brothers, including royalties paid to authors, records of stock offerings and company reorganizations, and general ledgers which contain daily notes on all aspects of the operation of the business; book catalogues and trade lists; research materials collected by Eugene Exman for his history of Harper & Brothers; visual materials, from drawings and photographs of Harper's authors to colophon designs and an oil painting of the original Harper's building.

Thirty affectionate letters of Henry James to his close friend Ranee Margaret of Sarawak. Also, letters to Walter Berry, Howard V. Knox, and Theodora Sedgwick.

Letters, copies of photographs, printed materials and exhibit labels relating to Edith Wharton, 1862-1937, American novelist and short story writer, best known for such works as "Ethan Frome" (1911) and "The Age of Innocence" (1920). A collection of printed works by and about Wharton given by Mrs. Haverstick is cataloged in Rare Books.

Many typescripts of Horton's lectures, research studies, articles, and professional case histories, material gathered by the Cartesian Research Bureau, and correspondence, chiefly professional. The correspondence is largely that of Samuel Dana Horton, father of Lydiard, and includes eight letters of Moreton Frewen, three each of Robert Todd Lincoln, John Fiske, and C.W. Fremantle, one of President James A. Garfield, and typescript copies of nine from Henry James. There are two letters from Dr. Horton to his guardian, Frederick W. Holls, and one each to Horton from William James and William Howard Taft. The remaining indexed correspondence is with colleagues and professional associates. Some of the case histories contain correspondence as well as documentary material. Also, a diary of Lydiard H. Horton for July to December 1896, and copies of excerpts from the diary of Samuel Dana Horton, 1860, photographs, newspaper clippings, and printed pamphlets.

Letters addressed to the Cranes from various members of the Crane and Howorth families, and from prominent literary figures such as Joseph Conrad, Henry James, H.G. Wells, George Bernard Shaw, Hamlin Garland, Elbert Hubbard, and Rider Haggard. A number of these letters relate to Cora Crane's activities after Stephen Crane's death, but the majority have to do with life at Brede Place in Sussex. Also present are a number of holograph manuscripts of Stephen Crane's literary works and manuscripts and typescripts of other material which he dictated. There is a group of stories and articles by Cora Crane, some pictures, photographs, art, and memorabilia. Also, seventy-four books from Crane's library, many of them signed.
