Letters written by Millay as well as manuscripts, proofs, documents, photographs, reviews and clippings relating to her books published at Harper & Brothers such as "Conversation at Midnight," "Wine from these Grapes," "Collected Sonnets," and others. The papers consist of materials from the files of the designer Arthur W. Rushmore who was in charge of production at Harper & Brothers and was the proprietor of the Golden Hind Press which printed limited editions of several of her works. Included are proofs of the above works with annotations and corrections by Millay and Rushmore and a carbon typescript of "Wine from these Grapes." There are also a number of clippings of poems published separately in periodicals. Other correspondents include Millay's husband, Eugen Boissevain, and George Dillon, with whom Millay translated Baudelaire's "Flowers of Evil" and Selected Poems." Also in the collection are the production files for the aborted Steepletop edition of "The Buck in the Snow."

The collection contains correspondence with the authors, including contracts signed with authors as well as negotiations with the authors over various aspects of publishing their works; financial records documenting many aspects of the operation of Harper & Brothers, including royalties paid to authors, records of stock offerings and company reorganizations, and general ledgers which contain daily notes on all aspects of the operation of the business; book catalogues and trade lists; research materials collected by Eugene Exman for his history of Harper & Brothers; visual materials, from drawings and photographs of Harper's authors to colophon designs and an oil painting of the original Harper's building.

Letters of Freeman, addressed to various personalities at Harper Brothers and the Century Magazine, relating chiefly to the publication in serial and book form of her various novels and short stories. Included are letters to Richard Watson Gilder, Robert Underwood Johnson, Colonel George B. Harvey, and Henry Mills Alden. Also, photocopies of the typescript of Brent L. Correspondence with many well known authors and scientists, correspondence with publishers, contracts, and other materials dealing with the many series of books which she has organized. Dr Anshen has edited over one hundred works in fields ranging from physics and biology to philosophy, education, psychology, and esthetics. Her series - WORLD PERSPECTIVES (Harper), RELIGIOUS PERSPECTIVES (Harper), CREDO PERSPECTIVES (Pocket Books/Simon & Schuster), THE SCIENCE OF CULTURE SERIES (Harcourt, Brace), PERSPECTIVES IN HUMANISM (World Pub. Co.), and THE TREE OF LIFE SERIES - have been concerned with new trends in scientific thought and the mutual intelligibility of the various arts and sciences. A new series, CONVERGENCE (Columbia University Press), was started in 1981 dealing with ideas that changed, or that are changing the world. Books from the various series are also included. There is also personal material of Dr Anshen and her family.
