This collection includes nine letters of Ralph Waldo Emerson as well as letters of Louis Agassiz, Amos Bronson Alcott, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr., Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, James Russell Lowell, John Lothrop Motley, Charles Sumner, and John Greenleaf Whittier. In addition, there are two incomplete manuscripts by Emerson and one document from the Liverpool Custom-house signed by Nathaniel Hawthorne as Consul for the United States. The collection also includes the corrected typescript, index, and page and galley proofs for Thomas Franklin Currier, A BIBLIOGRAPHY OF OLIVER WENDELL HOLMES (New York, 1953) which was edited by Professor Tilton. Also, some early correspondence and photographs of the Tilton family and friends. There are letters from the actors Annie Louise Ames, Richard J. Dillon, and Hans L. Meery to Tilton's grandfather, Bernard Paul Verne, as well as photographs, tintypes, and daguerreotypes of the Verne family and friends.

Correspondence of Emma Lazarus. While the letters are primarily of a personal nature, they also reflect both her literary career and, after the traumatic effect on her of the perssecution of Russian Jews, 1879-1883, her role as American champion of Jews. There are original autograph letters from John Burroughs, Ralph W. Emerson, Henry James, William Morris, Tommaso Salvini, and Ivan Turgenev, and twenty other prominent figures. Also, one letter from Lazarus to William Wetmore Story and the letter of her sister, Annie Johnstone, presenting this collection to Columbia University.

Papers of the Jay family and of those families related to the Jay family, including Bruen, Butterworth, Chapman, Clarkson, Dawson, Du Bois, Field, Iselin, McVickar, Mortimer, O'Kill, Pellew, Pierrepont, Prime, Robinson, Schieffelin, Von Schweinitz, Sedgwick, and Wurts. In addition to family and personal matters, the correspondence deals with anti-slavery, New York State civil service, repeal of the Missouri Compromise, the Civil War, the Blair Bill, international affairs, and New York City and State politics and government. There are letters from numerous prominent persons including George Bancroft, F.A.P. Correspondence, manuscripts, notes, course related materials, photographs, photostats, and printed materials of Rusk. Included are two small files of correspondence, approximately 100 items, relating to Rusk's editing of THE LETTERS OF RALPH WALDO EMERSON (1939) and to his study of occasional poetry in Colonial America for the Colonial Project in American Literature. The manuscripts include several miscellaneous items by Rusk, and five Columbia University masters essays submitted to him in connection with the Colonial American poetry study. Also, 12,000 note cards relating to this study as well as 150 photostatic copies of books of Colonial American poetry. For the Emerson edition there are 14,000 note cards on Emerson's life and letters. There are also 1,000 note cards for Rusk's edition of THE LETTERS OF EMMA LAZARUS (1939). The Columbia course related materials consist of notes, syllabi, reading lists, bibliographies, examination questions, lists of students and a few letters from them for Rusk's American literature course, 1931-1951. The printed materials are mainly reprints of articles on R.W. Emerson, inscribed to Rusk and containing annotations by him. In addition there are 23 photographs taken by Rusk in 1913, of a Passion Play which was performed in the Philippines.
