This series consists of Rothstein's work in China as a photographer for the United States Army Signal Corps (1944-1946) and the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration (hereafter UNRRA, 1946-1947). Subjects include conditions of famine and starvation, the distribution of UNRRA aid in various villages and refugee camps, a camp for Jewish refugees from Europe in Shanghai, individual portraits, temple exteriors and interiors, and the urban and rural landscapes. Photographs have been organized alphabetically by title, and related photographs have been grouped together (i.e. "UNRRA aid, assorted views). The series divided into the following subseries, based on discrete assignments and subject matter: Subseries 1: Starvation and UNRRA Aid, 1946-1947 Subseries 2: Landscape and Built Environment, 1944-1947 Subseries 3: People, 1944-1947 Subseries 4: European Refugees, 1946.

This series contains black and white and color negatives, many of which are copy negatives produced for specific exhibitions over the course of Rothstein's career, related to the above listed photographic prints. It has been organized into subseries that correspond to series I-VII (FSA, China, Other Countries, Politicians and Presidents, Life – United States, Utah, and Photographs – Other Creators). Within each folder, individual sleeves containing negatives are arranged in the same order in which their corresponding photographic prints are organized (e.g. for the FSA folder, negatives appear alphabetically by region, and for the China folder, negatives have been divided into folders labeled "Starvation and UNRRA Aid," "People," "Landscape and Built Environment," and "European Refugees," and so on). Individual sleeves are labeled with the title and date of the enclosed negative(s). Corresponding contact prints have been noted in the finding aid, and are enclosed with the negatives in their individual sleeves.

The films in this series depict various Chinese art forms through demonstrations by skilled artisans (including Weng himself in the painting episodes), as well as shots of art objects similar to those in the Li Sumin films. The films were filmed in the early 1950s. Each film runs approximately 10 minutes long and features color footage shot silently and English-language narration. The collection contains master picture and sound elements for five of the seven listed films (excepting Folk Dances and Dressmaking), prints for all seven films, and additional sound elements and original footage for many of the films. Titles include in this series: Chinese Shadow Play／皮影; Chinese Jade Carving／玉雕; Two Chinese Dances/Chinese Folk Dances／民族舞蹈; Painting the Chinese Landscape／山水画; Painting the Chinese Figure／人物画; Chinese Dressmaking／服装工艺; Chinese Firecrackers／焰火鞭炮.

The films are the earliest of Weng's works included in the collection. Each of the films profiles a different Chinese city or town – specifically the four major cities listed in the film titles, and Changshu, the titular "Town by the Yangtze," Weng's hometown. Each film runs approximately 10 minutes long and features color footage shot silently and English-language narration. Research shows that the films were shot in China during Weng's visit to China in 1948 and released as educational films in the US beginning in 1951. Elements included in the collection are master picture elements for all five titles (single-roll reversal for the first four and A and B rolls for the last), master sound elements for all five titles, two release prints of Yangtze, and additional original footage from Peking, Hangchow, and Nanking. These films are almost certainly the most interesting in the collection from a historical perspective, as they were all shot in China in the interim between the end of World War II and the coming to power of the Communist regime. Filmed in vivid Technicolor, they depict street scenes, artistic and architectural highlights, and people at work, among other subjects. The series is also known as the "China: The Enduring Heritage" series. This 13-part series on Chinese history and the affiliated film Buddhism in China were produced by Weng under the auspices of the China Institute in America, an organization for which Weng later served as president for several years in the 1980s. The series was filmed between 1972 and 1974, and was release in 1977. They were initially screened at museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Smithsonian, and the St. Louis Art Museum, then distributed as educational films by the Indiana University Audio-Visual Center on film and later, VHS. As with many of Weng's films, the footage consists largely of Chinese art and artifacts filmed in museums. The museum footage is supplemented by other documentary footage licensed from a variety of sources, including the BBC Film Library, the 1968 film Two Faces of China, directed by Magnum photographer René Burri, and Requiem for a Faith: Tibetan Buddhism, directed by Elda Hartley. The films run approximately 20 minutes each and feature color footage shot silently with English-language narration. This series contains transcripts, reports, meeting minutes, and correspondence related to United China Relief, including transcripts from a series of fifteen radio broadcasts called "Speaking of China", as well as documentation of the organization's work with refugees, children, soldiers, medical aid, education, and industry.

This series is arranged by format, and then alphabetically.

This series contains typescript news releases in English that were produced by the CIC from 1938. As the CIC was a propaganda office, the reports unerringly paint China's economic and military situations in a favorable light, while criticizing and undermining the Japanese war effort. Reports of Japanese war crimes and the plight of Chinese refugees dominate the pages, interspersed with addresses from Jiang Jieshi and Song Meiling (Madame Chiang Kai-shek). Stories involving missionaries and foreign countries also figure prominently. Also included are topical materials such as reports, original and copied correspondence, pamphlets, newspaper clippings, and bulletins that deal with Japanese war crimes, missionaries, China Information Service, and other efforts during the time frame. The titles of the folders are original.

China Institute was initially established in 1926 by the China Foundation for the Promotion of Education and Culture. Following China Institute's reorganization and incorporation in 1929, the China Foundation continued to participate in its budget and program. Series II, therefore, gathers budget and account statements, receipts and bills, and other funding and budget-related files. In particular, it includes the financial underflows of the Committee on Wartime Planning for Chinese Students in the United States between 1944 and 1947. Series VI features the operations of the Chinese Art Society of America, established in 1944 and a close collaborator of the China Institute. The Chinese Art Society works to disseminate knowledge of Chinese art through publications and organized events and exhibitions. Select exhibitions took place at the China House of the China Institute.

Organized alphabetically, and loosely chronologically within smaller groupings, Series III collects fruitful documentation that portrays China Institute's facilitative and intermediary activities during WWII. Not only does one see milestones of China Institute's own development – the acceptance of and relocation into the China House at 125 East 65th St, the Institute's home for the decades to come – one can identify exchanges between the Institute and important individuals across the pacific. Topics discussed range from services to students in China and the US, emergency relief and support to libraries and other educational institutions.

This series contains the records of local and national committees and conferences established in China in 1913 to continue the ecumenical work started by the World Missionary Conference held in Edinburgh in 1910. Materials include conference records, minutes, papers, pamphlets, maps, and publications. Two sub-committees are represented: the Social and Moral Welfare Committee, and the Phonetic Promotion Committee.
