Collection consists of ca.1,708 items, and some family correspondence and mementoes. The most valuable part appears to be his notes refuting various libel charges brought against him. The correspondence consists of letters relating to the publication and review of Jäckh's books, articles, and book reviews and typescript copies of letters by Hans Jäckh. There are manuscripts for his articles, lectures and speeches as well as clipping files of book reviews and articles by and about Jäckh in the European and North American press. The bulk of the collection is written and printed in German and deals with the Balkans and the Near East before 1920, including the Balkan War of 1912-1914, and the Turkish Revolution. Of particular interest are manuscripts and articles describing his land travels between 1903 and 1913 with the German fleet and on hot air balloons. Other topics covered include the Hocjschule für Politik, German labor unions, German-European relations, European attitudes towards the United States, and his literary works. There are also some manuscripts dealing with the Balkans and the Near East during World War II. An extensive file of photographs depicts, Albania, Asia Minor, Baghdad, the Balkans, Constantinople, Genoa, the German naval fleet, the Hochschule für Politik, hot air balloons, Italy, the Mediterranean, Turkey, the Turkish Revolution, the United States, Versailles, and Weimar. There are books from Jäckh's library, some with marginal notes, some signed and inscribed to him as well as copies of his own works.

The first series contains a small amount of personal and professional correspondence from the 1940s to 1970s, manuscripts of poetry and of theses and research papers from Berl's graduate studies at Leipzig and Columbia, biographical materials including photographs, reminiscences by and about Berl, and a few documents from his early years in Germany. The second and larger series includes papers which were posthumously arranged for publication by Susan Leibtag. The bulk of these writings are on topics related to psychology and social welfare, with a small number on philosophy and on Jewish identity as it relates to social work.

The correspondence relates chiefly to research for his books, articles, essays, and lectures as well as reactions, scholarly and popular, to his works. There are single letters for authors including Maxwell Anderson, Lawrence Durrell, Randall Jarrell, and Upton Sinclair; several letters each from John Masefield, James Thurber, and E.B. White; 21 letters from Clifton Fadiman; correspondence with Columbia University faculty and students; with classical scholars in the United States, Great Britain, and Europe; with publishers including Alfred A. Knopf and Oxford University Press; with his literary agent Curtis Brown, Ltd.; with HORIZON MAGAZINE, as chairman of its Advisory Editorial Board; with the Book-of-the-Month Club, as a Judge; with Encyclopedia Britannica Sound Seminars; correspondence concerning his very popular syndicated radio talks; and letters from his readers, ranging from members of women's literary clubs to headmasters of British secondary schools.

Correspondence, manuscripts, typescripts, notes, reports, memoranda, documents, and printed materials relating to Friess' dual career. The correspondence files include letters from professors of religion and philosophy at Columbia and other universities; from his students; letters dealing with Columbia academic matters; letters with related reports and memoranda concerning his membership in the Society for the Scientific Study of Religion and the American Council of Learned Societies Committee on the History of Religion, the latter concerned with lectures on Chinese religions by Wing-Tsit Chan in 1950 and on Islam by Louis Massignon in 1952. The academic writings of Friess consist of manuscripts, typescripts, manuscript notes, course materials, and other items relating to his teaching, research, publishing and other activities and associations at Columbia. Religion and philosophy are the chief topics, particularly German philosophy. There are numerous manuscripts submitted to Friess by colleagues and students, including three lengthy ones by Dr. Arno Carl Coutinho.

Letters and papers including correspondence extending in date from 1873 to 1930 and consisting principally of letters to Dr. Burgess from friends, associates, and contemporary scholars in the field of political science, and dealing with academic and scholarly subjects, the publication of his various writings, his teaching career, business, and personal affairs. Included are some original letters written by Burgess and copies of others. The letters to Burgess are from Europe and America with the majority in English, but a number are in German. Also, twenty-two file boxes containing manuscript and typescript notes for lectures, courses, articles, addresses, books, and more correspondence relating to these.

The cataloged correspondence is with Jacques Barzun, Benedetto Croce, Elena Croce, Wallace Fowlie, Thomas Mann, Salvatore Quasimodo, Arthur Schlesinger Jr., and René Wellek. There is manuscript material relating to the Bergel-Hauptman case and a number of Bergel's own essays and reviews. A copy of Bergel's German passport is included, as well as numerous family photographs and miscellaneous printed material. There is a cataloged photograph of Hugo von Hofmannsthal; and a gold Benedetto Croce centennial medal.
