The Carnegie Corporation of New York was established by Andrew Carnegie in 1911. According to its charter, the Corporation was established "for the purpose of receiving and maintaining a fund or funds and applying the income thereof to promote the advancement and diffusion of knowledge and understanding among the people of the United States, by aiding technical schools, institutions of higher learning, libraries, scientific research, hero funds, useful publications, and by such other agencies and means as shall from time to time be found appropriate therefore." The first two president's of the Endowment, Root and Butler, were long-time Trustees of the Corporation and the Endowment received many grants from the Corporation especially in its early years.
