Greek Games, 1903 - 2012, bulk 1903-1969

The Greek Games were an annual competition, based on Ancient Greek competitions and consisting of athletic and artistic contests, held at Barnard College between the freshman and sophomore classes between the years 1903 and 1967, with sporadic attempts to revive them in later years. This collection consists of materials used in and created during the annual competition at Barnard College. Included are reports, instructions, rule books, annual programs, publicity materials, newspaper clippings, reference materials, correspondence, photographs, costumes, and props.

The programs feature reproduction photographs of the dress rehearsals. The originals for many of the images are be found in the Photographs collection. Many of the programs have been annotated with last minute substitutions in the lists of the competitors and were used to keep score.

Included are annual planning reports, business ledgers, judges' scorecards, minutes of student and faculty committees, reports produced by faculty members, reports from student chairmen, correspondence, business reports, instructions on the rules of precedence, and instructions on relating to scoring and judges. The folders in this series are organized chronologically, with the report date for each year's games spanning the academic year.

The Coalition for Women Prisoners was a coalition founded in 1994 to address the issues and needs of women incarcerated in the New York prisons. The CWP was coordinated by the Women in Prison Project at the Correctional Association of New York. Formerly incarcerated women held various leadership roles in the Coalition as committee co-chairs, lobby team leaders, campaign organizers, peer-leader outreach workers, and public speakers. Their narratives, writing, and organizing work are present across the collection's materials. The CWP Collection contains physical and digital materials documenting the work of the Coalition for Women Prisoners and its members. The collection's contents include organizational records, photographs, video footage, films, artwork, reports, publications, and movement ephemera from the CWP's advocacy campaigns, programming, and organizational operations.

This is an oral history interview with Sharmaine Smith, a long-time Coalition for Women Prisoners member and a lead voice on the Adoption and Safe Families Act (ASFA) discretion campaign. It was conducted on July 21st, 2023 by Ava Sullivan-Thomas and Ana Sofia Harrison. Firstly, Sharmaine tells about her experiences and family life growing up in Harlem in the 1960s and 1970s. The second part of the interview focuses on her first drug-related incarceration and the events that preceded it. Sharmaine then speaks about having her child taken from her and her struggle with the child welfare system. She then talks through her experience going through treatment and writing a letter herself to a judge asking for ATI (alternative to incarceration). She explains how she cultivated advocacy skills and relationships through her involvement with ReConnect and the CWP; particularly on the ASFA campaign. The third part of the interview focuses on Sharmaine pursuing her education at John Jay College and her goals for a future community built to support formerly incarcerated people.

This is a continuation of Rhea Mallett's oral history interview conducted by Obden Mondesir on September 9th, 2022. Rhea is the former director of the New York Correctional Association's Women in Prison Project. In this role, she oversaw the creation of the Coalition for Women Prisoners. Rhea begins this interview by recounting her experience working with Judge Jack Weinstein to raise awareness about how women are uniquely impacted by incarceration. Rhea discusses the context of the time when she began working at the Women in Prison Project, with women being incarcerated at exponentially high levels and an exploding level of prison expansion. Next, Rhea shares about the history of the Correctional Association and its role in the criminal justice reform movement. She goes into more depth about the creation of the Coalition for Women Prisoners and reflects on the Coalition's main objectives and accomplishments. Rhea then discusses the Women in Prison Project's funding cut which forced her to resign from the project. Finally, Rhea reflects on how she understands the ongoing legacy of the CWP.

Frances Whyatt (born 1945) is an American author, poet and activist. She has published poetry, short stories, and novels under the name Frances Whyatt as well as under the pseudonym Shylah Boyd. Her published works of fiction and poetry include American Made (1975), American Gypsy (1983), and A Real Man & Other Stories (1990). Her work focuses on themes of gender, sexuality, and feminism. The Frances Whyatt Papers (1969-2000) document Whyatt's personal and professional relationships, creative writing practice, and her activism in feminist organizations such as Women Against Pornography. Materials in this collection include drafts, manuscripts, and correspondence. The collection also contains ephemera and miscellaneous materials, such as journal entries, research notes, fashion sketches, and recipes.
