This collection contains approximately 282 letters, written during 1970 and 1974 by Chen Yande and Li Yaying, two educated youths sent down for labor education to the Gutian Township, Shanghang County, Longyan, Fujian. Chen worked in a coal mine while Li worked in a rural commune. They exchanged correspondences frequently and shared stories and details of their respective life during the height of the Cultural Revolution. In 1972, Li Yaying was admitted to the Nanjing Railway Medical College and they continued to write to each other. The letters are chronologically arranged.

Chen Yande (b. 1950 August 20, Xiamen/Amoy, Fujian, China) is a professor and historian at the Xiamen University. Chen was admitted into the Department of History at Xiamen University in 1978, received his bachelor's and master's degrees in 1982 and 1985, respectively. Chen's research projects range from the history of socioeconomics in China, the Chinese diaspora in Southeast Asia, etc. During his youth, Chen was sent down to the countryside in western Fujian and worked in a coal mine.
Li Yaying was admitted to the Nanjing Railway Medical College in 1972 and later became a doctor.
Chen Yande and Li Yaying were close friends out of the No.1 Xiamen Middle School.
陈衍德(1950年8月20日 生于福建厦门)为厦门大学历史系教授。1978年,他考入厦门大学历史系,并分别于1982年和1985年获得学士与硕士学位。陈衍德的研究领域涵盖中国社会经济史、东南亚华侨史等。青年时期,他曾被下放到闽西农村,在煤矿工作。
李亚英于1972年考入南京铁道医学院,后来成为一名医生。
陈衍德与李亚英是厦门第一中学时期的挚友。
