Biographical / historical:

At 9:49 a.m. on July 28, 1945, Lieutenant Colonel William Franklin Smith, Jr. crashed the B-25 Mitchell bomber he was flying into the north side of the Empire State Building. The building was struck between the 79th and 80th floors where the offices of the National Catholic Welfare Council were located. 14 people were killed in the accident.

The plane fragment was sent to the President of George Washington University Cloyd Heck Marvin. He gave it to the GWU library on September 18, 1945.
