William G. Marquette was an assistant professor of botany at Columbia University. He received the degree of PhG from Northwestern University (1889) and a BS (1903) and PhD (1907) from the University of Wisconsin. He came to Columbia in 1911. As conscientious objector, Marquette refused to voluntarily register for military service in 1918. Marquette was sentenced by Federal Judge Henry D. Clayton to serve one day in custody of United States Marshals (at the Tombs) for refusing to register in the draft. The court ordered that he then be taken to his draft board for registration. His service was terminated by action of the Trustees. He went on to work at the Grosvenor Chemical Laboratory.
