This collection contains materials related to the operations of the Manhattan Railway Company in Mahnattan between 1878 and 1893. Materials include a notebook titled "General Manager, Mileage of Manhattan Railway Co. Met New York & [illegible], January 21, 1882, also additional memoranda as to dates of events &c &c" 1878-1883; a notebook titled "January 1885 Heights of structure on all lines..and approximate value & cash of above, 1885" 1878, 1885; a ledger titled "Diary - No. 2." 1882-1884, 1915; a notebook titled "Diary Chief Engineer's Office from Oct. 1 1887 to Jan. 30 1893"; and a notedbook titled "Stations" circa 1880s. Some notebooks include tipped-in notes, papers, and correspondence.

The Manhattan Railway Company began operating elevated railways in New York City in 1875. In 1879, it leased the lines operated by the New York Elevated Railway Company, founded in 1872, and the Metropolitan Elevated Railway, established in 1878. The Manhattan Railway Company's lines and operations were then leased by the Interborough Rapid Transit Company in 1902.
