This collection contains materials used and created by Marion Elizabeth Cook during her time as a student in the School of Library Service in the academic year 1940-1941. Items include her class notes, annotated syllabi, and library related publications.

Biographical / historical:

Marion Elizabeth Cook was born on March 30, 1912 in Farmington, CT, the daughter of Allen B. and Emma L. (Shepardson) Cook. She graduated from Hall High School in West Hartford in 1930 and from Connecticut State College, now the University of Connecticut, in 1935. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree from Columbia University's School of Library Service in June 1941. Her library career began at the West Hartford Public Library where she worked in various capacities, including children's room, cataloging, and reference. In 1946 she moved to Meriden, CT to be head of cataloging at Curtis Memorial Library, and in 1955 was appointed Head Librarian. She held the head position for 28 years until her retirement in 1983. Miss Cook was active on the local YWCA board of Meriden, CT as well as with state, regional and national library associations. Marion Elizabeth Cook died on November 5, 2001 at the Avon Health Center, Avon, CT.
