Scope and content:

This collection consists of the minutes, correspondence and administrative records of the School of Mines, Schools of Science, School of Engineering and now Columbia Engineering Alumni Association.

Biographical / historical:

The School of Mines Alumni Association was formed as an informal social organization in 1871, and a constitution was adopted the following year. The Secretary was tasked with keeping the members informed on the whereabouts of the Mines graduates. This led to the publication of several volumes of Alumni Lists, which record the positions and professional activities of the graduates. This professional society issued a technical journal, The School of Mines Quarterly, from 1879 to 1915.

Now known as the Columbia Engineering Alumni Association, the CEAA is an independent association that exists to foster and deepen the bonds of fellowship between Columbia Engineering alumni, faculty, and students worldwide. The CEAA awards scholarships, provides mentoring and professional guidance to students, promotes excellence in teaching, recognizes distinguished alumni, students, and faculty, and sponsors a wide range of social and professional events throughout the year. Every graduate of the School is automatically a member, and there are no dues or membership fees. Each year, the CEAA awards the Egleston Medal for distinguished engineering achievement, the Pupin Medal for service to the nation, and the Samuel Johnson Medal for distinguished non-engineering achievement, to recognize the distinguished alumni of Columbia Engineering.
