The Office of Projects and Grants managed the University's government contracts and grants-in-aid. The Office supported faculty and staff members on projects that sought or received support from sources outside the University. Chemistry Professor Ralph S. Halford served as the first Vice Provost for Projects and Grants starting in 1959. By 1961, those grants accounted for one-third of the University's budget. The office decided whether the University would sponsor a faculty or staff member's request to the government's leasing and granting agencies. When Halford was appointed Dean of Graduate Faculties, Anson Burlingame became Director of the University Office of Projects and Grants. He served as director from 1962 to 1973 and his office reported to the Vice Provost for Administration. From 1973 to 1995, James Lewis served as the University Director of Projects and Grants. He was promoted to Executive Director of Research Administration and Beth Israel took over as the Director of Project and Grants from 1995 to 2006. The office later became the Office of Sponsored Projects and Research.
