Erich Hertzmann (1902-1963) was a German American musicologist. Dr. Hertzmann studied at Dr. Hoch's Konservatorium-Musikakademie [Conservatory-Academy of Music] in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. He pursued further academic training at the University of Berlin (PhD, 1931), where he completed his dissertation on the secular polyphony of Adrian Willaert. Published in 1931, his dissertation was titled, Adrian Willaert in der weltlichen Vokalmusik seiner Zeit [Adrian Willaert in the Secular Vocal Music of his Time] (Leipzig, 1931). In 1938, Dr. Hertzmann emigrated to the United States. Over the course of his career, he taught at Columbia University (1938-1963), lectured at Princeton University (1946-1949), and held a Guggenheim Fellowship (1949). His research and extensive writings focused on Renaissance music and the creative process in the music of Mozart and Beethoven. On a personal note, in 1952, he married the accomplished singer and teacher Evelyn I. Chamberlain.
