Biographical / historical:

Marshall D. Shulman was a special assistant to the Secretary of State from 1950 to 1953 and ambassador and special advisor on Soviet Affairs to the Secretary of State from 1977 to 1980. He joined the Columbia faculty in 1967 as founding director of the Harriman Institute and retired as Adlai E. Stevenson Professor of International Relations Emeritus and senior lecturer on international relations. He wrote numerous books and articles on Soviet foreign policy and Soviet military policy. He died at his home in Sherman, Connecticut, on June 21, 2007.
