Henry White was a pastor at several New York area Presbyterian churches and Professor of Systematic Theology at UTS from 1836-1850. The collection contains four bound volumes of lectures notes compiled by his students, on lectures in systematic theology given from 1842-1849.

This collection contains four bound volumes of notes compiled by students on lectures in systematic theology given by White from 1842-1849.

Biographical / historical:

Henry White was born in Durham, New York on June 19th, 1800. Born to a working-class farm family, White distinguished himself at Greencastle Academy, earning the attention of the American Education Society, which helped fund his college education at Union College. After earning a degree with high distinction, White completed graduate study in Theology at Princeton University, taking a degree in 1826. That year, White was licensed to preach by the Presbytery of Columbia, and began doing so at the Allen Street Church in New York City. Two years later, in 1828, White became an active member of the group working to found Union Theological Seminary, and was appointed as Union's first Professor of Systematic Theology. For the remainder of his life, White served Union in this role, becoming a popular lecturer at Union, and remaining there despite being offered professorships at competing institutions. Henry White passed away on August 25, 1850.
