This collection contains two notebooks, labeled Alpha and Beta, of manuscript sermon notes attributed to the Rev. W. H. Hornblower.

Biographical / historical:

William Henry Hornblower was a prominent Presbyterian Minister born in Newark, New Jersey in 1820. He earned his undergraduate degree from Princeton College in 1838, and after a brief time studying law, went on to earn his Doctorate of Divinity from Princeton Seminary around 1842-1843. He served as Professor of Sacred Rhetoric, Church Government and Pastoral Theology at Western Theological Seminary in Allegheny City, Pennsylvania in 1883, on Princeton's Board of Trustees from 1864 to 1871, and earned an additional Doctorate of Divinity from Rutgers University in 1860. Hornblower died in Allegheny City on July 16, 1883. Among Hornblower's children was William B. Hornblower (1851-1914), a New York jurist and President Grover Cleveland's Supreme Court nominee in 1893.
