Scope and content:

This collection contains four scrapbooks with a column of biblical text pasted onto each page. Next to the biblical text Atterbury wrote references to additional sources to provide further information on corresponding verses. Sources cited frequently include the Sunday School Times and McGiffert's Apostolic Age, as well as hundreds of others. In addition to Atterbury's hand there may be one or two unidentified contributors who added sources to his notes.

Biographical / historical:

Anson Phelps Atterbury graduated from Union Theological Seminary (UTS) in 1879, and served as a trustee of UTS from 1894 to 1931. He studied Bible under Philip Schaff.

Atterbury attended Yale University from 1871 to 1873 and 1875 to 1876, and then spent two years at Andover Seminary before matriculating at UTS. Atterbury later received a Ph.D. from New York University and a D.D. from Hamilton College in 1893. Atterbury was ordained by the New York City Presbytery in 1880 and served as the pastor of Park Church in New York City from 1879 to 1910. While at Park Church he commissioned construction of the West Park Presbyterian Church, a building now recognized as a New York City landmark, and moved to lead this newly founded church from 1911 to 1918.
