This collection contains correspondence, manuscripts, lecture notes, speeches, documents, clippings, photographs and memorabilia relating to Hjalmar Hjorth Boyesen, Gebhard professor of German at Columbia University, 1881-1895.

Scope and content:

The incoming correspondence of Boyesen, containing several business and personal letters, some dealing with his publications; letters from various members of the Authors Club about his dues; and letters from his family. There are three letters from Boyesen to Robert Arrowsmith, Morgan Dix, and Paul Jüngling dealing with Columbia College matters. The manuscripts include an incomplete holograph of his book, the STORY OF NORWAY (published, 1886); a holograph of an essay entitled MR. HOWELLS AT CLOSE RANGE; lecture notes on English, French, and Norwegian authors, English, French, Norwegian, and Russian painters, immigration, and Norse ancestors; and two speeches to the Norwegian-American Seamen's Association and an address on education. There are a few documents; two biographical sketches, one of H.H. Boyesen, the other of his family; clippings of a biographical nature; clippings of book reviews; and photographs and memorabilia. There is also one holograph on the topic of United States - Cuban relations.
