Scope and content:

Lechtrecker's letters to his parents telling in detail of his life at Camp Hamilton near Fortress Monroe, Va., and at other encampments in Virginia and Maryland. The letters contain assurances that he was warm and comfortable contrasted with boasts of danger and hardship in the service and all request articles of food and clothing.

Biographical / historical:

Lechtrecker enlisted at age 16 with the 20th New York Volunteers. He is said to have become an officer with the Hawkins Zouaves and to have been wounded at the battle of Antietam. He survived the war and became a coppersmith working in the shipyards. He died February 27, 1931.
