Subseries II.3. Library Director's Files, 1950-1984

Scope and content:

The majority of this subseries is made up of the records of the former directors of the Libraries, Warren J. Haas and Patricia Battin. Warren J. Haas served as Associate Director of the Libraries, from 1961 to 1966. He left Columbia briefly to serve as the director of libraries at the University of Pennsylvania and was appointed Libraries Director at Columbia in 1969. In 1972 Haas became the first Vice President for Information Services and University Librarian. In 1978, Patricia Battin replaced Haas, who became the president of the Council on Libraries Resources.

This subseries begins with the records of the "Butler Librarian" before Warren J. Haas's appointment (For the records of the Director's Office before Haas (from 1943 to 1968), please see also Subseries II.1, boxes 17 to 21.) This subseries includes Haas' Day Files from 1960 to 1966 and again from 1969 to 1978; and there are multiple sequences of Haas' records from his office files, records those related to his outside committee work, and those related to his leadership of the Computing Center. Finally, there are four sequences of Patricia Battin's records, with each group representing a different addition.
