The manuscripts were prepared by American and emigre scholars on a variety of topics concerning the history of the CPSU, including the "Antonovshchina" the Latvian Communist Party and Soviet literature. A number of memoirs were also written for the project. Among the authors of the Program's manuscripts were Vera Aleksandrova (V. A. Shvarts), Vera Dunham, Nikolai Vol'skii (Valentinov), and Avrahm Yarmolinsky.

The Research Program on the History of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union operated at Columbia University in 1955-1957. It was headed by Alfred G. Meyer and supported by the Ford Foundation.
