Gladys Justin Carr was a publishing executive at Harper Collins and McGraw-Hill, where worked with, among other authors, James Baldwin and Irma Bombeck. Carr also wrote poetry, contributing to more than 100 journals and magazines. The Legends Internship Program at the Poetry Center of Smith College is named for her.
