Scope and content:

2 ink and wash drawings of Meridan Hall, Commodore David Porter's house in Washington, D.C. Signed George Hadfield, September 1798. Front elevation and ground floor plan. Garden front elevation and storey plan. One drawing includes a note: "Hadfield exhibited Arc. designs at Royal Academy in 1780-82. Brought to Washington from London by Col. Trumbull."

Biographical / historical:

George Hadfield was born in Livorno, Italy, of British parents. He studied at the Royal Academy in London and worked with English architect James Wyatt before emigrating to the United States. He was hired to superintend the construction of the U.S. Capitol in 1795. He was the younger brother of artist and educator Maria Hadfield Cosway (1759-1838).
