Scope and content:

Iris begins the first session by discussing her life in the countryside and the precarious conditions in which her family used to live. Iris recalls her father's violent behavior. She also recalls having to take care of her family, especially her schizophrenic brother. Iris discusses racism on the island being a mestiza.

In the second session, Iris discusses her father's work and returns to the topic of alcoholism

Iris comienza la primera sesión discutiendo su vida en el campo y las condiciones precarias en las que se encontraba su familia. Iris recuerda la conducta violenta de su padre. También recuerda que tuvo que encargarse del cuidado de su familia, especialmente de su hermano esquizofrénico. Iris discute el racismo en la isla siendo una mujer mestiza.

En la segunda sesión, Iris dialoga sobre el trabajo de su padre y retoma el tópico del alcoholismo

Biographical / historical:

Iris nació en Matanzas, Cuba, en 1963. Fue la mayor de tres hermanos. Su padre era militar y alcohólico. Cuando tenía cinco años, se mudó a Ciego de Ávila, donde cursó sus estudios primarios. Luego, se mudó junto a su familia a La Habana. Trabajó como dependiente en una tienda y como secretaria en una empresa. Iris se casó con un marino y tuvo una hija. Iris fue entrevistada para el proyecto que culminó en la publicación del libro How Things Fall Apart. El nombre es un seudónimo para el proyecto

Iris was born in Matanzas, Cuba, in 1963. She was the oldest of three siblings. Her father was a military man and an alcoholic. When she was five years old, she moved to Ciego de Avila, where she attended primary school. Later, she moved with her family to Havana. She worked as a store clerk and as a secretary in a company. Iris married a sailor and had a daughter. Iris was interviewed for the project that led to the book How Things Fall Apart. The name is a pseudonym for the project
