Gisela begins the interview by remembering her childhood. She then discusses the bond with her grandmother and mother. Gisela comments on racism in her first job. Gisela discusses the Yoruba religion and the appropriation of Afro-Cuban religions by white communities. She then discusses arranged marriages with tourists in order to get off the island. Gisela discusses her relationship with the Communist Party. She also discusses homosexuality. Finally, Gisela recalls the Mariel Exodus and the Special Period

Biographical / historical:

Gisela nació en La Habana, Cuba, en 1962. Tuvo diecisiete hermanos. Su padre trabajaba en una fábrica de zapatos y su madre era panadera. Su primer trabajo fue en una fábrica de zapatos. Luego, se dedicó a trabajar en discotecas y espacios de fiestas. Tuvo tres hijas. Practicaba la religión Yoruba. Gisela fue entrevistada para el proyecto que culminó en la publicación del libro How Things Fall Apart. El nombre es un seudónimo para el proyecto

Gisela was born in Havana, Cuba in 1962. She had seventeen siblings. Her father worked in a shoe factory and her mother was a baker. Her first job was in a shoe factory. Later, she worked in discotheques and party spaces. She had three daughters. She practiced the Yoruba religion. Gisela was interviewed for the project that led to the book How Things Fall Apart. The name is a pseudonym for the project
