Scope and content:

Marielis begins the first session by discussing her bond with her mother and father and the rigidity of her upbringing. Marielis then recalls her first jobs and the period when she was pregnant with her daughter. Marielis recalls her first job in tourism, where she met her German husband. She also recalls her life in Munich. Marielis discusses her first relationships with women, living with partners, and sex education. At the same time, Marielis recalls the imprisonment of people for organizing gay and lesbian parties. She discusses the lack of LGBT spaces. Marielis discusses the lack of artistic materials in Cuba. She also discusses the relationship between Cubans and entertainment. Marielis recalls the Special Period and the acquisition of her first house. Later, she discusses the link between Cuba and the rest of Latin America. Marielis reflects on the opening to tourism. Marielis discusses racism, the fetishization of Black women, machismo, and the emergence of a mulatto identity.

In the second session, Marielis discusses her new love relationship. She also discusses her work in an art gallery and the problems in obtaining materials to work with. Marielis discusses the difficulties of operating economically with several currencies, the period when it was illegal to hold dollars, and her relationship with tourism. Marielis discusses insecurity. Marielis discusses domestic violence and violence among women. She recalls having a violent relationship with another woman. She then discusses abortion. Marielis discusses her father's alcoholism and problematic drug use in Cuba.

Biographical / historical:

Marielis nació en La Habana, Cuba, en 1964. Su padre era alcohólico. Se graduó como Licenciada en Literatura y Lengua Alemana por la Universidad de La Habana. Trabajó como traductora en la Fiscalía General de la República. Marielis se casó y tuvo una hija. Luego, trabajó en el rubro turístico, donde llegó a estar a cargo del Hotel Meliá Cohiba y del Hotel Nacional de La Habana. Tras divorciarse, Marielis conoció a su segundo esposo, un hombre alemán con quien se mudó a vivir a Munich. Después de cinco años de relación, Marielis retornó a La Habana para dedicarse a la pintura. Gestionó una galería de artesanías para turistas. En la década de 1990, comenzó a relacionarse afectivamente con mujeres. Marielis organizó fiestas clandestinas para lesbianas en su casa. Marielis fue entrevistada para el proyecto que culminó en la publicación del libro How Things Fall Apart. El nombre es un seudónimo para el proyecto

Marielis was born in Havana, Cuba in 1964. Her father was an alcoholic. She graduated with a Literature and German Language degree from the University of Havana. She was a translator in the Office of the Attorney General of the Republic. Marielis married and had a daughter. Later, she worked in the tourism industry, where she was in charge of the Meliá Cohiba Hotel and the Hotel Nacional de La Habana. After her divorce, Marielis met her second husband, a German man, with whom she moved to Munich. After five years of relationship, Marielis returned to Havana to devote herself to painting. She managed a handicraft gallery for tourists. In the 1990s, she began to have affectionate relationships with women. Marielis organized clandestine lesbian parties in her home. Marielis was interviewed for the project that led to the book How Things Fall Apart. The name is a pseudonym for the project
