Biographical / historical:

The Institute of Philosophy and Politics of Education (IPPE) of Teachers College, Columbia University, was a small, grant-funded education research entity founded by Lawrence A. Cremin in 1965. The Institute sponsored interdisciplinary research in history, philosophy, and the social sciences with applications for educational theory and policy. Its projects were funded by entities including the Carnegie Corporation of New York, the Ford Foundation, the Spencer Foundation, and the John Weinberg Fund.

Cremin served as director of the institute from 1965 until 1974, when he was appointed to the presidency of Teachers College. Harold J. Noah succeeded Cremin as director, serving in that post until at least 1978. Ellen Condliffe Lagemann directed the Institute from 1988 until 1994. Other scholars associated with the Institute included Martin S. Dworkin, Max Eckstein, Robert D. "Robbie" McClintock, Douglas P. Sloan, and James R. Sheffield. While the Institute does not appear to have formally dissolved, it is no longer extant as of 2022.
