The collection consists of one book with recipes from Schauffler's time as a student in domestic science at Teachers College from September 1902 to June 1904. As student pursuing the then-new two-year curriculum in domestic science, Schauffler took DS 10, Foods and DS 11, Foods, Advanced Course with Professor Helen Kinne and Mrs. Mary Forrest. Schauffler organized the class materials, the typed handouts with her corrections in pencil, and created a recipe book by pasting the recipes onto paper and placing them in a small, three-ring binder.

Clara Elizabeth Schauffler was born on February 1, 1879 in New York. She graduated with a BA from Smith College in 1901 and she completed the two-year curriculum for the Bachelor's diploma in education for teaching domestic science from Teachers College in 1904. Schauffler became a domestic science or home economics teacher in Bloomfield, New Jersey. She taught for over 35 years in three different schools. In 1960 Schauffler was named ''Woman of the Year" by the Executive Council of Business Women's Clubs of Essex County for her service in many causes, including work with the Red Cross during two World Wars and two terms as president of the Montclair Business and Professional Women's Club. She died February 28, 1972, in Bloomfield, NJ.
