Biographical / historical:

The Conference on Racism and World Order was held March 16-20, 1944 in Evanston, Illinois. It was an outgrowth of a conference held at Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio, in March 1943 on Christian Bases and World Order. It was felt that this topic was so important that it needed further study. The Division of Foreign Missions of the Board of Missions and Church Extension of the Methodist Church sponsored the Evanston Conference and the preparatory studies in ten cities in the mid-west. The project was under the direction of Dr. Edmund D. Soper, of the faculty of Garrett Biblical Institute. Each of the groups in the ten Midwestern cities was composed of 15-20 people. Each group prepared a report that was read at the Conference in 1944. There were no findings at the Evanston Conference of 1944, no resolutions, and no recommended actions. The reports represent the thinking of the groups and provoked discussion onsite. The Evanston Conference was believed to be a "good introduction to racism as a factor in world order."
