Joseph Henry Smith (1913-1981) was professor of law, Columbia University, 1961-1981 (LL.B., 1938). He was the George Welwood Murray Professor of Legal History at the Columbia Law School, where he taught for 20 years. Smith also served as the editor of the legal papers, The Law Practice of Alexander Hamilton. Smith was awarded the first James Willard Hurst Prize by the Law and Society Association for his ''distinguished work in American legal history" in 1980.
