These records consist of legal documents including civil actions and lists of property related to the administration of the will of Emily O. Gibbes and her gifts and bequests to Barnard College.

Biographical / historical:

Emily O. (Oliver) Gibbes was the granddaughter of Robert Oliver, merchant of Baltimore, Maryland. His biography, written by Stuart Weems Bruchey, was published by Johns Hopkins Press in 1956. He had two children: Margaret Oliver Colt and Emily Oliver Gibbes. Emily Oliver Gibbes had a daughter of the same name. The younger Emily Gibbes was a resident of Newport, Rhode Island. An early supporter of Barnard, she was introduced to the school by Annie Nathan Meyer. In 1907, upon her death, the bulk of her estate was left to Barnard.
