This collection contains 112 letters from May 1944 to January 1952, written by Carol M. Franz during her service in the American Red Cross and the U.S. State Department during and after World War II. Also included are Red Cross ephemera, brochures, memorabilia, and Franz's resumes and other materials documenting her professional life following the war.

Users should be aware that Box 3, folder 10 includes graphic photographs, including photographs of bodies.

Biographical / historical:

Carol Franz was born in Brooklyn, New York, to Matilda and Joseph Franz. She received a B.A. in Fine Arts and English from Barnard College in 1936, and completed work towards a Master's in Education from New York University. During World War II, Franz was attached to the Army Corps Ambulance Unit of the American Red Cross; she also worked in England, Scotland, France, and Germany with the 57th Field Hospital. She was sent to Nancy, France, during the Battle of the Bulge. After the war, she worked for the U.S. State Department at the American Consulate in Germany, processing displaced persons in the Funk Kaserne Visa Station.

Apart from her work in the American Red Cross and the State Department, Franz also worked for the New York Public Library and the American Association of University Presses. She died in August 2008.
