This collection contains notes, data, student research (papers and theses), chapters and articles written by historians, oral history interviews, and presentations on the history of Barnard College, which were eventually incorporated into Robert McCaughey's book A College of Her Own: The History of Barnard. The collection also includes manuscripts of the final work and correspondence about the research and the publication of the book.

Robert A. McCaughey, emeritus professor of history, joined the faculty of Barnard in 1969. He is the author of multiple books on the history of Barnard College and Columbia University, including A College of Her Own: The History of Barnard; Stand, Columbia: A History of Columbia University in the City of New York, 1754-2004; and A Lever Long Enough: A History of Columbia's School of Engineering and Applied Science Since 1864. McCaughey was the founding director of the Barnard first-year seminar program and served several terms as chair of Barnard's history department. From 1987 to 1993 he served as dean of the Barnard College faculty.
