Scope and content:

The collection contains correspondence, manuscripts, news clippings, legal documents, scrapbooks, photographs, teaching materials, and personal materials of former Barnard college faculty member, Lucyle Hook. Also included is Lucyle Hook's Ph.D. dissertation and a transcript of an oral history conducted with Lucyle Hook.

Of particular interest are materials detailing trips abroad, including Ankara and Istanbul, Turkey; Papua New Guinea; Kathmandu, Nepal; Bali, Indonesia; Johannesburg, South Africa, numerous photographs of her travels abroad and her time at Barnard, and manuscripts of her published and unpublished writing.

Biographical / historical:

Lucyle Hook was born in Quanah, Texas, in 1901. She attended the Texas Woman's University, received an M.A. from Columbia University, and her Ph.D. from New York University. Lucyle Hook began teaching at Barnard as a visiting professor, filling in for Minor Latham, and ended up staying at Barnard for 21 years. In 1967 she was appointed as Professor Emeritus of the English Department. In addition to her teaching career at Barnard College, Lucyle Hook travelled the world. She took time off from Barnard to serve as the head of the American College for Girls in Turkey, and travelled throughout the Middle East and Africa. She also took numerous research trips abroad to Greece and London. A travel scholarship fund for Barnard students was named in her honor. She passed away in 2003 at the age of 103.

Box 5, Folder 9 of this collection is restricted, as it contains sensitive personal information, per the Archive's policy. Materials in this folder will be open to researchers in 2060, 75 years after their date of creation.
