Scope and content:

The Class of 1971 Oral History Collection contains 79 oral histories of individuals who were part of Barnard College's class of 1971. Included in the collection are transcripts, audio recordings, and video recording of interviews. The oral histories discuss the experiences of Barnard alums and are contextualized within the social, cultural, political, and economic histories of the United States. Narrators also discuss their individual life histories, including their paths leading to Barnard and their lives after college. Themes common across interviews include female friendship, feminism, political involvement during and after their time at Barnard College, issues of race and class among students at Barnard, and romance.

Access and use

Restrictions:

Audio and visual materials must be accessed on-site, and transcripts of oral histories are available via the Barnard Archives and Special Collections digital collections. The oral history of Linda Elovitz Marshall is restricted until 2030 or until Marshall's death, whichever is first. The video of the oral history of Wilma Liebman is restricted until Liebman's death.

Terms of access:

Permission to publish material from the collection must be requested from the Barnard Archives and Special Collections. The Barnard Archives and Special Collections approves permission to publish that which it physically owns; the responsibility to secure copyright permission rests with the patron.

No copies of the audio and visual resources may be made or distributed until September 12, 2019.
