Biographical / historical:

The Institute for Urban Education (IUE) was a project that partnered college students (fellows) with teachers from New York City public schools and their pupils, with the participation of Education faculty from the students' colleges in the Consortium for Excellence in Teacher Education (CETE). The goals of IUE were to recruit and prepare talented undergraduates at CETE colleges to become effective middle school teachers in America's cities. IUE aimed to acheive its goals through a program of field experiences in middle schools, summer learning teams, an activity centered curriculum, and exploration of virgin forests and urban parks.

In 1993, Barnard received a five year grant from the DeWitt Wallace-Reader's Digest Fund to support the Institute for Urban Education program. The program was further supported in 1997-1998 through a grant from the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation.
